Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Hi. I'm just wondering what apart from space and cages would be needed to become a rescue for pig's? I'm only thinking out loud right now, all I know is I want to help. I'm financially secure enough to do it but still havn't decieded yet. I don't even know if there is a need here in Australia (melb) OR if I am even qualified, (most definately not) but I read alot and spend alot of time watching them. I've only had my pigs for about 4 mths now, but I feel confident I could help save a few from being put to sleep and try to find them good homes. I wanted to work at the shelter (for free) but with small kids thats hard so this is something I could do from home. What do you think? Ps) I mean short term housing, not adopting, sorry If I wasn't clear on that. |

I think that you should defenetilly do some fostering first. |

Look at the forums over on www.cavyrescue.com. That forum is mainly about becoming a rescue. Good luck! |

Ok thanks for that. I think fostering is what I had in mind but how do they find new homes then if I foster from a rescue person and the rescue person is who finds the homes? Its all too confusing, do they arrange it all and I just take care of it in the mean time? |

Yes, the person advertises the piggie (like on their webpage), and finds a home for it. Meanwhile, you are housing the piggy. |

Some rescues let people foster a couple animals after they approve you (there is usually a foster application), sometimes they do it to make more space etc. Some rescues will also let you handle the adoption for those animals as long as the rescue approves of the adopter, and you follow the adoption process steps. Other rescues will let you foster a couple animals, but they will be in charge of adoption, and you will nothing to do with it. |

Thanks, I think I get it now. Boy what a process it is just to help! It seems as if fosterer's are just in the way then. I don't understand though why a rescue person dosent just keep the homeless piggies themselves until a suitable home comes along? |

Most people don't have room for HUNDREDS of guinea pigs.It like foster parents for kids. |

I didn't say anything about HUNDREDS of pigs! And I think if a rescue person or a foster person dosen't have "some" spare room then they shouldn't be putting theyr'e hands up to be one. Anyhow, to become a foster, where should I start? Does anyone know any special requirments that I would need or conditions? |

I think it is a good solution. The rescue could only take what they have room for or instead they can get foster piggie parents and then save even more pigs. The rescue has the visibility to find the homes and advertise the pigs. Foster homes let them help even more homeless piggies. I wish I'd thought of becoming a foster home. The rescue provides the cage and supplies - would have been way cheaper for me. |

You should look for humane societies, shelters, or cavy rescues in your area and call them up. They almost always need a helping set of hands! |
