From thirds to a herd?

I currently have three guinea pigs. A humane society near me has 3 boars in, they are adorable and look very sweet- I'll be going in to meet them tomorrow. Nothing's set in stone yet, but I feel a strong pull in my heart to give these guys a home.

If I do decide to adopt them, I know that my food and veggie bill would double, as would the loads of laundry, the vet checkups, the floor time, the attention, etc. These are all things I am able and willing to do. My husband and I are responsible adults.

As my current pigs are female and an altered male, I would be making a whole new cage for these guys and probably put it in a different part of my house. I would consider putting them below or above my current pigs 2x5 C&C, but if I'm not mistaken- boars need more space. Also, Leonidas has a history of not getting along with other males.

I've only had one boar before, and it was before I knew anything about proper guinea pig care. These guys are littermates and 1 and a half years old. When does puberty happen, what should I expect/watch out for should I decide to adopt them?

Re: From thirds to a herd?

Oh they are absolutely adorable. If they are one and a half years old then they most likely already went through puberty and should most likely go together. Stacking cages would probably work just fine. Well I hope it works out for you and your husband.

Thanks for considering adoption and possibly giving these guys a great home.

Re: From thirds to a herd?

I have two boar litter mates who will be 1 on the 7th. They are absolutely the best of friends. Puberty should be done. Mine went through it at about 4-5 months. It wasn't anthing serious. They do rumble more than my girls when they disagree about something, but it's never a fight. A couple minutes later they are cuddling . They hate to be seperated though. I can't even give them lap time apart because after about a minute the other starts to cry. I've heard some people have trouble with boars near females but my two boys are about two feet away from their mom and "aunties" and have no problem. Have fun with these guys. They are absolutely adorable.

Re: From thirds to a herd?

I talked it over with my husband when he got home, and we'll be going to see them tomorrow during his lunch break. We've decided that if we do adopt them, we'll be naming them after an actor and two bad guys... Hugo, after Hugo Weaving who played Agent Smith in the Matrix movies. Boris and Snidely, from the Rocky and Bullwinkle series.

Re: From thirds to a herd?

I'm so nervous that they won't be there tomorrow or something, that somebody will have snatched them up. It's near impossible though, seeing as how the woman who answered the phone didn't even know that they had pigs... they must have just been listed today. I really want them to stay together, and the lady couldn't hold them over the phone. They're currently undergoing a mite treatment, so I would probably let them stay there until it's over so that they don't infest my pigs.

Here are photos of their soon to be namesakes, if all goes well-

Boris Badenov

Snidely Whiplash

Hugo Weaving

He also was V in V for Vendetta and... somebody in Lord of the Rings, I think.

Re: From thirds to a herd?

I know! I could hardly even eat breakfast. That's how excited I am... x_X

I'm also really glad that James was supportive last night, the only thing he said was "No more after these! 6 is the limit!" I have to agree with him, I don't think I'd be able to divide my guinea budget and time any further than 6.

Re: From thirds to a herd?

Thanks, but they're treating them for mites and I haven't built the cage yet- so I probably won't be bringing them home til next week at the earliest. You'll be in that chair an awful long time! I have to go in person to reserve them, that's all that's happening today.

The lady on the phone said that they're only treating one of them for mites, if they're living together when I go today I will definitely be asking for them to please treat them all. She also said that one of them had 'greasy fur' so I've been looking for shampoos- Gorgeous Guineas looks fantastic but it's pricey as all get out, and I'd have to wait for it to ship. I wonder if I can find anything similar stateside?

I also just came to a realization- I live in a one bedroom apartment, quarantine is going to be tough... especially since my sister-in-law and her seeing eye dog, Truckee, are coming to visit in a couple weeks. I have to figure out where to put both cages so that they're seperate, but away from him as well! Oof. So far the only spots I can figure are one in my bedroom, and one in the pantry. Not ideal. Maybe I could put up a gate and block Truckee in the living room?
