Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I never realized until I read on this site just how bad the need was to adopt piggies. I perferred adoption over purchaseing but did not realize how important it was. I am a foster & adoptive parent so my heart breaks a little for people & animals in need. I have searched for a rescue near me and the closest I can find is Knoxville, Ky (about 4 or 5 hours away).I e-mailed them anyway about a week ago & haven't heard anything back. Checked Craigslist and couldn't find any there in my state, samething for Petfinder.com. I posted a "wanted" ad on freecycle and have not gotten any responses. I called my local animal shelter and they treated me like I was crazy for calling about anything other than cats & dogs. I want 2-4 females. I really want brown/black ones, but that is something I could get over if I had to. I would like to keep the cost of them around $10 - $15 each since I want to build them a nice cage and will have a big getting started fee with that. I can drive upto a hour to get them but that is about it. I always have my kiddos with me and a REALLY long drive with a carload of kiddos & guinea pigs is more than my patience can handle. I also would like to have young or baby piggies because my household is a rather rowdy one. I fear that getting adults that are not used to a busy envirment could be easily spooked. My children are homeschooled & very mature & gentle, but 5 kids playing (even playing nicely) can be deafening at times. My zip code is 25320. I live in Sissonville, WV. It is located about 20 minutes outside of Charleston. Sometimes it is reconized as Charleston (depending on the search engine you use) Please help me. I do not want to purchase them from a pet store or breeder, but I am beginning to think this is the only way I will get them. And I really, really want them. HELP!!!!!!!!! |

They are JUST a guine apig rescue and have a ton of really cute females. Worst comes to worst you get a kid free day if you leave the kids with daddy on a sat or sun??? Pittsburgh, PA: Adoptable Pets: Petfinder= But I will keep looking ok??? |

I saw those as well. They are REALLY cute! I know now my hubby would never go for a day alone with the kids, although it is a dream of mine! :-) I never thought about someone meeting me though. You think they would meet me a hour from my house or would that be to much to ask? I'm new to this. Thanks again. Last edited by Ly&Pigs; 10-28-09 at 03:58 pm. |

I suggest letting this animal shelter know to inform you whenever a pig comes in: Welcome to the Kanawha / Charleston Animal Shelter Actually, just go through the West Virginia list, Animal Shelters in West Virginia | Petfinder Petfinder list, please consider a lab piggy!: Roanoke, VA: Adoptable Pets: Petfinder Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue. I am pretty sure they would be willing to meet you halfway: Available Guinea Pigs for Adoption Sorry it isn't much, I'll keep a look out... |

Here is something, not sure if its too far from you, but craigslist said it was a nearby area. From the sounds of things you would definitely be rescuing this piggy from an uneducated owner guinea pig |

WOW! You guys are all so great! I can't believe how much you all have done. I really appreciate it! I have check all the links in this post and have not come up with much, unless a rescue would be willing to meet me a hour from my house. Why aren't there any rescues close to me? It is SUCH a bummer!!!! Maybe once the kids are grown and leave home (many years from now since my youngest just turned 1) I will start one. I also want you all to know that I hold absolutly no false hope that my kids will take care of our pets. I figured that comment might be coming soon so I just wanted to respond 1st. Anyways--- Thanks for all the hard work and please keep me in your thoughts & prayers! Last edited by Ly&Pigs; 10-28-09 at 03:58 pm. |

Ok, I just found two little baby girls at a rescue in Indiana. They are really precious! They are 4 hours from me. I emailed the rescue and asked it they'd meet me about 1.5 hours from my house. Please pray this works out!!! I have fallen in love at 1st sight. Ugh... I'm gonna have a knot in my tummy until I hear back from her! Please pray!!!!! |

Those pigs are adorable. Hopefully something will work out with them. That said, don't rule out adult pigs. Babies tend to be very skittish, and some rescues will not adopt babies out to families with children. They are more difficult to hold and can be easily dropped. Adult pigs tend to be calmer and more tolerant. They can certainly get used to a being in a busy household. Also don't rule out males. Many people think they are friendlier than females. Be sure to let the rescue know that you have children and what kind of pig you are looking for. I agree that if you can't find pigs to rescue, you should not go to a petstore. You will probably end up with sick, missexed, or pregnant pigs. Having a pig die within a short while of getting it will be really hard on your children, and handling a pregnancy and finding homes for the babies is definitely not something you want to deal with. Just be patient, and something will work out. You can contact rescues about meeting you half-way, ask shelters to contact you if they get any pigs in, and keep checking Craigslist daily. Pigs there often come in waves. There will be a lot of them for a little while and then nothing. Just be patient. You'll need some time to get a cage set up anyway. Good luck in your search! |

Aw, good luck! I also saw those girls (I live in Indiana) and thought they were precious. Their names are Jade & Pearl. I really hope all goes well for you and them. ETA: I don't know if you saw but it says on their page that they are both possibly pregnant since they were with a male when they arrived. Just wanted to inform you in case you didn't see. Good luck once again! |

I just need to vent... Well I have contacted two different resues and niether have been able to help me. The first was a little bit over 4 hours away & I told them the situation and she suggested another shelter 7.5 hours away from me. It really just seemed like she didn't even wanna deal with me. Then the one that had the two piggies I talked about above, contacted me and told me they didn't want to adopt them out after putting them on petfinder. Please remind me again why I am spending HOURS & HOURS searching for adoptable piggies, that I am gonna have to travel at least a hour or two away to pick up and pay an arm & leg for. All the ones I have found are at least four hours away & most are $35 - $50 each! I can go 15 minute from my house and buy 2 for $13 each and have them tomorrow. I really don't wanna do that but I am soooo frustrated in the amount of time this is taking to find some. I thought it might be cool to get them by my oldest birthday on Oct 14th (2 days from now) but I think that might be a little impossible to do. This is taking up all my "free & mommy" time! |

Well, please don't buy pigs. Just be patient and ask your local shelter and vet if they get any pigs, to contact you. |

Amanda, please try to wait for some rescue pigs to become available. You don't need pet guinea pigs, they are not an essential to your life, there is no need for you to purchase them right now from a petstore. Maybe use this time while you are waiting to build an awesome C&C cage, and educate yourself and your children about their care? |

Please don't buy from a pet store! I know it may be tempting for you, but please think of the industry you'd be supporting if you did. If you're patient, I'm positive a pig will come your way soon. They seem to come in waves on Craigslist and to shelters. I've seen a lot lately where I live, I think it's all the people who bought pigs because of "G-Force" getting bored. It breaks my heart. Ethics, not cost, should be the number one factor when animals are involved. God put us in dominion over them, it is up to us to make sure that we give them the care and treatment anything that he has created deserves. I can guarantee you that most pet stores don't. |
