I would ask if some one from the rescue can come to you and sex them all. The small animal rescue near me has two people who 'specialize' in cavy's and are very good at it they go out and check on piggies in foster care and do all the intakes so they can check them personally. Yours might have someone like that.

If you read this again here, please try to contact me again so I can get a message through but most assuredly I need HELP from this volunteer you have in Kankakee SOON as humanly possible. I have ONE definite male baby pig here but I cannot be sure about the other seven even WITH a vet's knowledge. "Don't hold me to this" is definitely NOT what I went to the vet to HEAR I need HELP and SOON. Before any more "accidents" happen. I am going to separate ALL the babies I think from my four adults to be sure I don't get them preggers here again. But the babies were born Sept 5th 6th and the 8th so TIME is not on my side. Please HELP me soon as possible. THANK YOU SO MUCH

Man, I sure hope everything works out. It sounds like you are at wit's end with the whole "educated guesses" with the sexes. I'm not sure at how old, it becomes easier to tell which sex they are but hopefully soon so you can at least put your mind at ease knowing who should be housed with whom.

OK I just sent an email. Please let me know if it comes through. THANK YOU so much for ANY assistance as time is now NOT on my side. The ONLY thing I can do here now to least safeguard my adult females is to put ALL the 8 babies together in the spare cage I have and PRAY none of the baby females are able to conceive yet but THAT is truly a gamble I do NOT want to take with the possible female babies lives. I do not want to risk my ADULT females but it is a toss up now. Risk baby female lives or adult females. I can't WIN either way. So, please if you CAN, send someone to least SEX the babies so I CAN put boys with boys and keep the girls SAFE. THANK YOU FOR ANY ASSISTANCE. I would be eternally grateful to you.

GOD this is a NIGHTMARE from HELL pardon my language I am desperately TRYING to do the RIGHT thing and getting thwarted at every turn. Now I truly UNDERSTAND why so MANY pig owners find themselves in this VERY situation. It isn't that we are "bad" people. Just when even a VET cannot tell a male from a female, what chance do WE have???!!! I can sex gerbils but that is about it So when a vet tells me "Don't hold me to this" when sexing my babies, I was flabbergasted to say the least!!!! I can't separate the boys from the girls WITHOUT knowing who TO separate!!!! So my best is to put ALL the babies in ONE cage away from my four adult females and take that risk with the babies not impregnating each OTHER. What a nightmare. All I wanted was a herd of SIX girls. Poor Oreo. Not HIS fault Petco made a "mistake". A vet just PROVED that TO me here for $32. Least it wasn't any more $ than that thank goodness. But it was for NAUGHT. I am still in the stew pot here til someone comes through for me and I PRAY the volunteer from Critter Corral can do that for me SOON. Thank you for your posts to me here. It helps knowing someone cares to listen and feel with/for me. THANK YOU SO MUCH

Re: Baby pigs need GOOD homes

Can you put each baby in their own 1x2 cage? It's better for them to be in a tiny cage at this point than pregnant. I feel so sorry for you having to go through this.

GOD I wish I COULD do just that. I don't have the ROOM (I live in a small apartment) or the funds to do it. I never "expected" to have four litters of 8 babies from an "accident" I now understand HOW could be made from a chain pet store. If I had only KNOWN all the pitfalls OF pet store purchases of pigs and had known OF all the pitfalls owning pigs (YES MY OWN SILLY FAULT FOR NOT LEARNING FIRST ALL THIS) but when I came into owning the pigs first given TO me (two adult females about a year old) I went out and STUPIDLY bought four more "females" to make a herd. I was IGNORANT and that is NO EXCUSE for the mess I find myself IN now. But I am TRYING to do the RIGHT thing now and finding it is really a nightmare in itself finding the resources TO help when you have made a mess of things. I am holding out HOPE that help is on the way. I learnt the "hard way" and I don't wish this on ANYONE. I just wish that pet stores could be held accountable for the animals it sells in educating the buying public but most ESPECIALLY the more "difficult" animals. No one just buys a tarantula hopefully without knowing WHAT it EATS or that you daren't DROP the poor thing. (did you know they break up inside and die if you do drop one? They are very fragile creatures. Yes you shouldn't drop ANY living creature I KNOW LOL) Anyway, I PRAY help is ON the WAY. I love these pigs and I WANT to do the RIGHT thing for them. I wish I HAD done more research INTO them and that is MY folly I know. I just don't want these poor babies to PAY for my stupidity. HELP must be on the way. THANK YOU for your posts to me

Re: Baby pigs need GOOD homes

I wish you live closer. I have tons of grids left. Can you use cardboard boxes to separate them for now? I know it's not ideal, but I still think it's better than them getting pregnant. Males have to be separated no later than 21 days. Don't take any chances, what if they all get pregnant again. I can't imagine how many more babies will show up.

After one accidental litter, the mistaken sex was realized and separated. How does the accidental litter count get to FOUR?

I hope I'm just missing something here.
I just reread this post AGAIN too. We sometimes lose something in the translation LOL. I had two girls given to me at one year old each then I went out and bought four more "girls" inside of a two week time frame. Three came from Petsmart at a day apart so I jokingly called them sisters since they could have actually BEEN so being bought as they came into the pet store. Then I bought the other "female" from Petco for number 6 and that was OREO who turned out to BE a boy the miss sexed pig. I had one more join the fray Snickers again from Petsmart for seven pigs in all. Snickers passed away after being with me only five weeks. So six pigs it was and my family was complete. I noticed Oreo was being a tad "rough" on the other pigs and told the pet stores about it but they said she was being the DOMINANT pig and showing her authority and not to "worry about it". So for about five or six weeks I didn't til I saw he was "doing it" and again I was told females do that as well as dominance thing. But I finally had enough and asked my friend to take Oreo and when we looked him over good, we saw his "equipment" to put it tactfully. Oreo was a boy and not just playing the dominant pig. But the damage was DONE. MY FAULT as I should have had him SEXED when I noted his behavior. That I take FULL responsibililty for. This whole mess started as a sexing mistake and was compounded by stupidity. MINE. So, I hope the babies won't pay the price here and unfortunately I lost Bissy the mother of three of those babies. I paid the HIGHEST price you can PAY. I only wish this would NEVER happen EVER again to a single pig owner but as we know, it will. I hope my story might help some other person who hasn't gone down this road avoid. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL FOR YOUR KINDNESS TO ME. I have learnt alot here and will continue to do so. Thanks everybody and GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Yep that is what I meant to say and I apologize if it came out differently. YES Oreo WAS one too many LOL and his not being a HER got me into the soup. MY MISTAKE. Oreo was just an innocent bystander. If ONLY I had him checked out when I saw his "dominant" behavior. I was a new pig owner and SO MUCH I still have to LEARN. I am just so sorry it had to be the HARD WAY and Bissy my beautiful Bissy had to die cause of MY stupidity. But I WILL help these babies at ANY cost. I WILL make sure they do NOT pay for MY mistakes. THANK YOU

GOSH I hope you READ this SOON. I have been contacted by the Critter Corral people and they are coming for my babies. I don't know IF you want a boy or a girl pig so I don't know WHO to hang onto for you when they come and SEX them. I am keeping TWO girls for myself so that leaves FIVE babies. I do NOT know the sexes OF those babies for sure (I am hoping the two I plan on keeping are girls) so I know I have ONE MALE for sure according to the vet. She WAS SURE of the sex of the one male. A friend who helped me ALSO said male so we can be fairly certain the one IS a boy. I will hold onto him for you here and HOPE you did want a boy so the other five will be going to Steger IL Critter Corral rescue. I HOPE you wanted a boy here in that case. If you get this SOON, please reply as the people are coming to get the babies SOON as this weekend. I wish I had thought to ASK you what sex you wanted. DANG. Stupid me.

Re: Baby pigs need GOOD homes

OOPS make that SIX babies are going to the Critter Corral today (10-2-09) They will be here in 9 more hours. NO I can't sleep. This is the LAST night with the six. Half of my herd will be gone by noon. The volunteer who is picking them up gave me a good vet IN my area who specializes in small animals especially guinea pigs. If only I had known I would know now just WHO is WHO in the sexes. Anyway, my LAST few hours with the babies and it is bittersweet. I love them but I KNOW I cannot keep them and I sincerely wish them the best homes out there. I want to thank ALL the people who pointed this organization my way. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH.

Yes I got my first set of over a year old pigs from a cousin in Naperville. They were female. Then I went out and bought two more. A couple weeks later I bought two MORE all but one from Petsmart. When I saw this one at PetCO I had to have that one. In all I ended up with six pigs then another one from Petmart totalled SEVEN. Unfortunately that one died at five weeks old. And in the meantime Oreo was being the "dominant" pig with the remaining pigs. I had NO IDEA he could be a BOY as I trusted the PET SHOP to do right by me. That was STUPID of me and making matters worse I never thought to have Oreo checked for possibly being male. Never occured to me I could have a male til I saw him "doing" it to a pig. This was WAY more than being "dominant". I gave Oreo to a friend and we finally found his "equipment". So, then I played the waiting game. Five female pigs how many did Oreo get to? Well, he got to everybody when they started delivering babies Sept 5 then then then the 8th. Four litters four mothers. One deformed stillborn baby then two weeks after the birth one dead mother. I paid dearly for trusting the pet store "experts" and finding this site changed the way I forever see pet stores. Anyway, yes FOUR accidental pregnancies from ONE miss sexed pig.
