Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0
I have had a long summer getting over the death of my beloved Misspiggy. I never knew how old she was, but she seemed healthy and just passed on for reasons I do not know or understand.... Her daughter went to live with her younger sister. I didn't have the heart to get another piggy at the time so she wouldn't be alone. I am now ready to open my home again to the wonderful sounds of Wheeking. I live in Southeast Kentucky (zip 41763) and haven't had any luck in finding piggies that aren't 6 or 7 hours one way away from me. I can't travel really far, and I am desperate. I REFUSE to buy from a pet store!!! So I wanted to see if there was anyone out there that had any ideas, or someone closer to me that wanted to let me adopt a couple. I have no preference to color or age. I do seem to have a better connection to girl piggies, but have only known one boy piggy, so I would be willing to keep a boy and try that out. I would like to find a deal that includes the pigs and a C&C cage, but it isn't a must. I already have enough grids to make a 2X4 cage, but no coroplast, and too less grids to make one with a bottom off the floor, which is what I desire. No worries about me taking good care of them. I read this site daily, and used to work as a Vet Tech, so I have a good relationship with a Vet. I buy my supplies online, so the pigs would get the best pellets and grasses. I REALLY hope to find 2 piggies or maybe even 3. I have one dog, a Weimeraner who lives outside in a large fenced yard, and a 90 Gallon salt water reef tank filled with corals and fish who are my water babies, As well as a 3 gallon tank with Dwarf Sea Horses. All of my pets are well taken care of and loved. I am married and a stay-at-home mom to my 3 year old daughter. My daughter was very gentle with my other piggies, so there are no worries of her hurting them. They would live in my living room where they could be around us at all times. If anyone can help, or wants to ask questions, please feel free to PM me on here. Thanks guys! -Jessica Last edited by Paula; 09-28-09 at 01:49 pm. Reason: do not include your email address here |

I have tried Petfinder and came up with several possibilities, but after reading the ads they said that each set of pigs would be required to go to a home with a child 13 years or older. These were from a rescue in Knoxville,TN. I actually found two rescues in KY, but they had only one 7 year old piggie (Lexington) and the other place only had mice and ferrets (Louisville). I found two bonded girls on CL and they even came with a C&C cage and supplies, but after I found someone to take me to Lexington to get them, the lady wouldn't answer my calls so I could come and pick them up. I'm not having any luck at the moment, so if anyone close sees anything with potential, please let me know. |

There are always Humane Societies, which often don't put guinea pigs up on Petfinder...at least I haven't seen many! But I got my first GP from Lexington Humane Society, and my second GP from This Little Piggy & Me | Adoption and Rescue of Guinea Pigs near Cincinnati. Their rescue is WONDERFUL if you're willing to make the drive. Or just keep calling around to Humane Societies to say you're interested in adopting any GP's & see if they can give you a ring or email you if they get some in. |

Thanks a bunch. I called The LHS this morning and they only had the one piggie. I will give the place in Cinncinati a call today as well. None of my surrounding animal shelters take in Small and furry animals. |

Have you checked craigslist? If it's not to much difficulty you may have to get them at different times. |

I've been stalking Craigslist to no avail. I had actually went to Lexington to pick up 2 girls and a C&C cage. When I got down there I had a couple of things to do before I picked them up (because I didn't want to have to leave them in the car) and the lady said that was fine. She said just to call when I got done. I tried calling her for like 4 hours before I had to come back home and she never answered! I was so disappointed. But I don't mind if I have to get them separate. I just really want to find some piggies again, and do it the right way. I actually check the CL in KY and TN, even though I can't go real far into TN for pick-up. |

To give you an idea, from where I live in the bottom corner of TN to where I used to live in the top corner was a 2hr drive. To drive from here to my other old residence in Middle TN it takes about 3 1/2 hrs. Does that help? |

We have gotten all of our piggies from the Lexington Humane Society. They have a little room for the small animals/exotics. They seem to get lots of piggies so maybe they will have more soon. On petfinder, the Scott County Animal Shelter (Georgetown) has 2 males. Country Critters Animal Rescue in Frankfort has a male piggy. I don't know anything about this rescue, though. Good luck finding your furry friends! |

Thank you guys for all the help. Lexington is about 3 hours away from me but it can be do-able. Louisville and Nashville are not as much an option unless I can get someone to meet me. I haven't given up on the Lexington Humane Society. I am keeping up with them as much as possible. |

I have only been looking in "pets" on Craigslist. One of the ads you found in Lexington aren't in that category.... I feel stupid now... *laughs* Thanks for helping me out, now I know to look in other places... Sadly enough I have called about each of the pigs in the Lexington ads, and I have either been ignored or told that they were already sold. But I have hope and patience. |

I have found that people categorize them incorrectly so I do look in "for sale" as well. More often than not it's someone legitimately looking to rehome. Also people seem to have trouble spelling "guinea" so I just search for pig and pigs in "all wanted/for sale" and "all community" and find them that way, too. |

Good news! I adopted two young girls yesterday! They are adorable, but haven't been handled a whole lot. If anyone has suggestions for getting them to warm up to me, let me know. I let them have a calm day yesterday because of the traveling and such, and today I tried to lure them to me for treats. One actually came up and nibbled the food, so that's good I guess. They run if there is a loud noise or if I come up to the cage. Time will tell I guess... |

I am so happy you found piggies!! Where did you get them? It takes a little time for piggies to adjust to you. With some TLC and some yummy food they will come around! |

I lived in Northern Kentucky (Florence) for a couple of years some time back. If driving isn't a problem for you, you may want to try some shelters in the tri-state area. Cincinnati, Ohio chiefly but if you're to go that far, you could also try Indiana. Also, if you live in the southeast portion of the state you probably aren't too far from Tennessee. I can check with my best friend who works for a veterinary clinic in Erlanger and see if she can give me any suggestions and then get back to you if you'd like. |

Thanks for the offer, Pulsepoint. But yes, I adopted two young girls from a family who no longer cared about them. I am currently working on a 2X4 cage. My husband is building a stand for it hopefully this weekend. They are just wild right now. Well, not wild. More like extremely jumpy and cautious. The family bought them from a pet store and only had them for a month and decided they were too much. Not that they were doing much for them anyhow. If they had been taking care of them right, they definitely would have thought they were alot of work. But they are cute and "Shooting Star" has already ate a veggie from my hand, so I am hopeful.... "Moon Dancer" won't approach me yet, but she doesn't run like Star does when I try to catch her. Oh well, they look to me like they aren't over 2 months old. I have plenty of time to work with them, and I am hoping they aren't set in their ways already. |

Excellent news that you found a pair of piggies! Kudos to you for working so hard to find some! Your hard work paid off. Good luck with them. Don't worry, they will warm up to you after a while. |
