Unhappy Need help from New Haven CT area rescuers

I have an internet acquaintance who recently got a missexed pair of guinea pigs from a pet store (what a surprise) who has four new babies now. I found out about the situation because she mentioned she's planning on giving the babies back to the pet store once they're weaned. Naturally, I told her that would be rewarding the pet store with free replacement livestock for their incompetence with cavies in the first place, and begged her both to read the threads here about cavy care and post them here for rehoming with people who actually know and care about them. She's considering it. I'll go on Petfinder to check, but if there are New Haven, CT area rescuers here, please let me know - not having to do the leg work herself might make the difference for her.

I can't tell you what sex the babies are, she doesn't know how to sex them (I've pointed her to the relevant threads here and on guinealynx but I don't know if she's read them. Fortunately she did at least know to separate the male from the female before the birth, and I already mentioned to her that the male babies have to be out of her cage at 21 days.)

Re: Need help from New Haven CT area rescuers

I live in New Haven. I'm not a rescuer, but the GP rescue in CT is Critter Connection in Durham, which is about a half hour from New Haven. I have also seen a rabbit/small animal rescue that often has pigs in Stratford, about 20-30 minutes away depending on traffic called Brandee's Hop A Long Hollow

Re: Need help from New Haven CT area rescuers

It would be better for her to try to rehome them herself then taking them in to a rescue. That should be a last resort.

There are many things she can try such as posting on craigslist, petfinder, an ad here in the adoptables section, gl, pigloo, Guinea Pig Home - Home.

Re: Need help from New Haven CT area rescuers

We would be more then happy to check the babies to determine what sex they are and to assist your friend in finding a home for them if she will contact us. Craigslist is one of the worse places to advertise guinea pigs. If your friend is not able to care for them after they are weaned we can bring them into our rescue until a home is found. The guinea pigs in our rescue receive excellent care, are housed in the C&C cages, and our adoption screening is very thorough.

Re: Need help from New Haven CT area rescuers

Thanks, CTgpig, are you with Critter Connection? If so I think she might have emailed you already, but I know she's had some die already, I don't know what's going on with that, and neither does she, I'm afraid.

Ordinarily I would agree, but she simply doesn't know what she's doing - pet store cage, doesn't know how to sex pigs, and her first thought was to give them back to the pet store. It hadn't occurred to her at all that people use them for snake food and the like. I'd like a rescue to be able to discuss with her how to screen applicants, etc. at the very least.

Re: Need help from New Haven CT area rescuers

Yes, I'm with The Critter Connection. I did get an email from someone who's pig just had babies and sadly two had passed away. I've offered to help her, sex the babies when they are of age and support her with any advice that she needs.

How far is this rescue from Cape Cod? If I cannot find good homes for my boys, maybe a trip to New Haven is in order...

Re: Need help from New Haven CT area rescuers

I don't know how far it is, but my internet acquaintance was most impressed with the rescue. They sexed her pigs for her (and she lucked out - she now knows she has mama and papa have a son and a daughter - so they will each have a same-sex buddy) and answered a ton of her questions. She also got to see the wonders that are C&C cages and is in the middle of building them.

Critter Connection is in Durham, CT not New Haven. New Haven is about a half hour south. Per Yahoo maps Cape Cod to Durham is 167 miles and about 3 hours.
