Hi everybody ! I live in greece and i have loooots of guinea pigs . I love them very much and i am very sad about those their dying and euthanasized in shelters . here in greece lot of people want guinea pigs and the only way having one or more is from a pet store or rarely from a birth . In england and on other near to us countries in shelters are lots of guinea pigs which need homes . If any shelter have 30-50 guinea pigs for adoption and can ship them here i would like to contact with it . I would be responsable for all guinea pigs to come in greece safe and give them to good homes . i would like to contact with the shelter by telephone ... thank you very much! |

Would you keep them personally? Sounds like a lot of work. Do you have enough money for large enough cages, vet bills, etc.? Are you planning on running a guinea pig rescue? If so, you shouldn't get guinea pigs from other countries, you should just put an ad somewhere that says you re-home guinea pigs, rather than "shipping" guinea pigs such a long way, causing unnecessary stress on them. |

how many times i should say there are no shelters no rescue centers in greece ! the only way to get a pig is from a pet shop . you like guinea pigs to euthanasized or to stressing for 2-3 hours and then going to loving homes . if somebody wants to shipp to me guinea pigs , rabbits, ferrets ,hamsters, rats, mice ,gerbils, chinchillas i would first find home for them and then i would tell to the shelter send me for example 3 guinea pigs 4 hamster e.t.c . i would be responsable for all the small pets coming to greece . |

I myself have 8 pigs of my own. Just those 8 alone take up a lot of money. Like trump_cinnamon said, there is a lot they need, like vet bills, fresh veggies and space. And don't forget you have to separate females from male and so on. And of course some pigs won't get along with others so they will need to be separated. For my 8 pigges, I spend at least $100 a month on just veggies. They also need pellets and unlimited hay (which goes quickly enough with 8) and constant fresh water, which should be changed and cleaned out everyday. Plus you need to clean the cages at least every week, but probably more since you'll have mass quantities. I do clean mine twice a week, and I use fleece so laundry soap money adds up too. If you use shavings, that's a whopping amount as well. So if you really want to do what you say, and do it properly, you really need to think this through and take full responsiblity. |

So you are planning on running a shelter? Like I said, it would be better to run a shelter, but just have people who don't want their guinea pigs anymore in Greece give them to you, and if people wanted to adopt, they could adopt from you. With 30+ guinea pigs, I guarantee that you won't be able to give each of them lots of attention. Without knowing who you are, I'm pretty sure that no shelters would just ship all of their guinea pigs to a you. Especially since the shelters already take good care of the guinea pigs, and people are adopting them where they are. It would cause so much stress on the guinea pigs to ship them to you anyways. Just make your own shelter if you want to. Put up ads that say you will take in guinea pigs, and will adopt them out. |

i am not going to make a shelter . when the animals arrive in greece the people who told me that they want an animal they would come and take their animal from me . also if the shelter is giving the guinea pigs to good people nto give them to me but if the shelter is going to kill the guinea pigs or other small animals instead of killing them it can send them to me to give them to loving homes ! |

Sorry if I'm understanding this wrong, but you said that shelters kill guinea pigs?? No, they don't. They get a guinea pig from someone who can't keep it anymore, and then keep them until someone else wants to adopt them. The guinea pigs currently in shelters aren't being killed. If a guinea pig is usually unheard of in Greece, then perhaps your friends who want one should just get another pet, as vet care will not be at all easy to find. It seems to me that if you got the guinea pigs shipped to you and your friends, they would be more likely to die than in the shelter, because of lack of proper vet care in Greece. You said that hamsters are common in Greece? Maybe your friends could adopt one of your many hamsters! Or they could go somewhere to adopt a rabbit. It seems like it would be easier to get vet care for these animals as opposed to a creature practically unheard of in Greece. |

Shelters would only euthanize a guinea pig if it had something that made the guinea pig suffer, and they could not cure it. Guinea pigs aren't just killed in shelters because they don't have enough room. You seem to think that there are guinea pigs being freely killed in shelters, which isn't true. If hamsters and bunnies are common in Greece, why can't your friends get hamsters or bunnies, as vet care would obviously be easier for them. |

why you dont understand what i am saying ? lot of people are taking hamsters and rabbits but if i can rescue the ones that they are killing on shelters i would be very happy . if some animal isnt taken for years from a shelter they arent killing it ? |

What you don't understand is that shelters aren't killing the guinea pigs!! Like Ly said on the other thread, nobody in their right mind is going to just send you 50 guinea pigs. |

It depends on the shelter. Some will only keep cats and dogs and do automatically euthanize smaller animals. But some will contact rescues to come and get them. It all depends. 30 to 50 animals is way too many for one person to take care of. Can you feed them all? provide them with enough food? Are you able to clearly identify males and females to keep them from breeding? Is the food that you need to feed them accessible in your area? Are you going to take them to regular vet visits? You don't make enough money for all of that. How much research have you done to know the cost of these animals? how are you going to find the time to clean the cages, trim the nails, and make sure they all get enough attention? The amount that you are requesting is outrageous. |

I am going to state this yet again. No one is going to ship you 30-50 guinea pigs. Starting a shelter is not as easy as you may think. Also in the other thread you stated you wanted to know why it's not ok to breed pigs. How do we know that if someone foolish enough were to ship you pigs that you wouldn't breed them to create more. Sounds more to me like you want to get into a cavy mill business rather than run a shelter. |

I think you possibly have good intentions, but the fact is that not all shelters are kill shelters so pigs aren't being put down like you think they may be. Other than issues I stated above, it's very expensive to ship animals to other countries. On top of that, many countries have quarantine laws. What you are asking is just unfeasable. |
