should I ask for a fee?

I am looking to rehome my friend's two males. I posted a thread on this site about it in the Adoption section. But I was wondering if I should ask for an adoption fee to deter any "bad people" from getting them? I don't know if asking for a fee is even allowed on here. What should I do? I could use the money for gas to get them to their new home and/or buy them a new supply of food/hay/bedding for their new home. But my main reasoning for the fee is to keep the snake people and other similar people away. What should I do? And how much should the fee be?

Re: should I ask for a fee?

You should definitely charge a re-homeing fee. I would say about $30 would be reasonable.

In the adoptables discussion forum:

Please do not say or post anywhere "Free to good home." That is open invitation to bunchers and snake owners. Trust me, you will not be able to tell who they are. They are professionals at telling you what you want to hear in order to obtain your animals for nefarious reasons.

Re: should I ask for a fee?

I agree with pennykit&amanda. You really do need to ask a re-homing fee. If they are really tight on money and can't afford the vet (or even maybe the proper food) do you think they are going to pay a re-homing fee? As well as to keep them from becoming snake food. I think $30 is reasonable as well.

Re: should I ask for a fee?

Thank you both very much. But I found a really good rescue in Knoxville that will take them. I am so relieved. But I'm glad to have this information for future reference.

I am not bashing here but I do want to say that rehoming the pigs yourself is a much better thing to do than taking them to a shelter/rescue. Shelters/rescues should be a last resort if you can't find another home. By taking your pigs to the rescue, you may have taken up spots there that other pigs in desperate need could really use.

You make a very good point. However, it was an urgent situation. They are being well cared for now and I believe the lady at the rescue will do a great job at finding them a good home. But I do understand where you are coming from. This lady and her husband are both retired and have a "the more the merrier" kind of attitude. She has more time to devote to rehoming them than I do. If this were a different situation, I would have taken the task of rehoming them on myself. Thank you for saying that though. It's a perspective I think a lot of people could use.
