I want to adopt!

Right now I have two little boys. Very energetic Very large cage!

Looking for the Bloomington/normal, Il Area I'd prefer Male but female is fine...If Spayed. I'm not 21 yet so I can't adopt from the shelter in my area... Which currently doesn't have piggies. I just checked today!

my Fiance had turned to me last night and asked me for another piggie. Which is funny because in the beginning he didn't like piggies. Now He loves them. Anyway. I'd like to adopt. I'm really hoping that we can do this!

I've always purchased piggies...and now i want to do it right.

Thank you all so much!

Re: I want to adopt!

If you don't mind traveling a bit, I know there is a guinea pig rescue in Steger. Here is their site: The Critter Corral

Otherwise, go to petfinder and do a search.

Also, you cannot put a female with two males, even if she is spayed. They will still fight over her. So males only, unless you plan on having two separate cages.

Good luck with your search and thank you for wanting to adopt!

Re: I want to adopt!

I knew about that..I had read about them only adopting to the Decatur area. As they are located in Chicago. I got kinda depressed over that. I don't have that reliable of transportation. I will keep an eye out for the local shelter, they very seldom have piggies I will contact them and see if there is anyway they would be willing to adopt out to my area.

But you can put 2 males in one cage without a female? I thought they would fight regardless?

Sorry for the silly question - I'm adopting piggies for the first time and I'm trying to make sure I don't do anything wrong.

I was only looking for females because I thought they would adjust better and not fight. Is this true of males too?

Thank you for your help!

Re: I want to adopt!

Boars can be just fine living with one another. It all depends on the guinea pigs' personalities whether or not they will get along (males or females). Even sows together may fight, so don't expect to get females and have no problems. If you are new to adopting, it might be a good idea to find a pair in a shelter that is already bonded. That way their chance of fighting may be lower. Here is a link if you have not read this and want to know more: Guinea Pigs Social Life

Re: I want to adopt!

internetjunkey, don't give up! It took me 5 months of searching to find one of my pigs. You could also try craigslist. There are sometimes people on there looking to rehome their guinea pigs. Just be sure that they are rehoming them and not selling babies that they intentionally bred.

Thanks! I don't know what I read that made me think that 2 males was a no-no.

I am looking for a bonded pair. There is a shelter requires people to adopt pairs and I'm really leaning toward driving the 3 hours to adopt from them so I know the piggies are used to each other.

I understand that nothing is 100% - I just want to try to make things as easy as I can for the piggies since I'm new at this and I'm sure I'll be clueless about certain things! Thanks for your help.

Re: I want to adopt!

internetjunkey, If you're interested in adopting from Critter Corral, I'd contact her. She has several foster homes in IL-one being in Decatur which isn't too far from you. There's also a few places in IN-EARPS (which is in Northern IN) and one in Sellersburg, IN (more central IN). They may be able to work w/ you on transporting closer to Normal.
I know that these three specific rescues have taken in over 72 piggies from one person very recently. There are a large number of males in this group. And many sows that are pregnant or have given birth. You may be able to find a younger male that would get along w/ your two existing boars. Just be prepared to have separate cages if they fight.
I personally have 2 neutered boys and 17 girls. I tried to introduce the two boys w/ the girls but they fought. But I also know of several members on here and on GL that have several neutered boys w/ ALOT of girls and they've had no problems. Good luck!

Re: I want to adopt!

You can try PAWS (Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter). That is only about 30 or so miles from you. That is where I got my Gizmo. You just have to call and see if they have any. If they don't keep calling. I actually only called twice!! Since they do not specialize in guinea pigs they are not very knowledable. So accurately sex your pig before leaving. I would think that they would know, but I would not bet any money on it. I do appreciate their efforts. Let me know if I can help.

Re: I want to adopt!

Thank you all so much I will definately keep my eyes open, And find the 'right' piggie for my future piggie herd! my Oldest isn't the one I worry about when it comes to fighting. My Younger one... I want to say that he is in his "teens" which is funny. They are always challenging each other. But gizmo (my oldest) is very laid back, he will welcome everyone who wants to snuggle! Now. Tilt, my younger, refuses to be touched. He doesn't like to snuggle, he's always on the go... and EVERYTHING is his. He will pull the food bowl away from Gizzy and any kind of veg, he will grab the plate and run with it. I worry that he would put up some kind of fight. So. I might wait until he's older to adopt.

but thank you all so much, And I will keep an eye out!!

Re: I want to adopt!

This is Rose from The Critter Corral. We do have a foster home in Decatur who has some great males looking for a home and we have adopted quite a few out to the Normal area. You can contact Carrie (who is in Decatur) at carrie@crittercorral.org.
Thanks for wanting to adopt!!
