Looking to adopt in S.E. Ohio

We adopted two terrified piggies almost a year ago. They are now happy and feisty but does not like to be held. My kids, of course, would like to hold them, but I will hardly ever let them, because they don't like it. My daughter loved this calm piggie at Petland that liked being held and petted, but I will not buy when there are so many "piggies in need" out there.

We are looking for a baby, or an older piggie who loves being petted. I do not mind any medical issues, as long as the piggie likes being held. Give us a senior with medical expenses, we will take good care of him/her. We have two brothers in a 2 x 4 grid cage, I want to expand to a 2 x 6 plus second floor. I will get them nutured if you have a friendly female for us. We take pets very seriously. We live in Athens, Ohio.

Don't know how close you are to Chicago but Critter Coral has lots of cuties. All ages. You can see them on livedeal.com. Search for guinea pig in chicago. Or email me if you have questions. I just adopted a sweet sow last night.

Re: Looking to adopt in S.E. Ohio

That is where I got my to guys from last time, and as much as I would like to rescue the poor piggies there, I know they will be traumatized. The rescue is a "normal" house filled up with I don't know how many dogs and cats running all over the place, it smells, and it is quite a crazy place. I admire the owners who goes to such a length to save animals, but my egoistic wish for a tame guinea pig will not come true there. And if I go there to check them out, I know I will not have the hart to leave them there. I am very thankful for the brothers I got from that rescue, but this time, I will try to find a pig that likes to be held.

Thank you!

Re: Looking to adopt in S.E. Ohio

Thanks again. I have replied to some Craigslist adds, so I hope to get a piggie that way.

Re: Looking to adopt in S.E. Ohio

I assume you already tried petfinder. If you put in your zip code and search for guinea pigs, it will list them from nearest your location on top. You can also do a shelter/rescue search by location and start calling to see if they have any piggies. I know I am in search of a sow for awhile now and once I started calling shelters some have guinea pigs even though they are not listed in their adoptable sections. A rescue or individual owner would probably be ideal, because they have a much better knowledge of the piggies disposition, being you are looking for a cuddler. I don't think the spcas and such have quite as much time to get to know the piggies. Sorry I can't be of more help, but good luck in your search.

Re: Looking to adopt in S.E. Ohio

You can always try Petfinder, and the newspaper sometimes has guinea pigs in it as well.

Re: Looking to adopt in S.E. Ohio

Thank you, I'm keeping a lookout at craigslist but I think I will call the shelters around here today. I found a young cuddly guy in Cincinnatti (petfinder) but it is very far away, and their adoption rules are very strict - I don't think my vet is an exotic vet, there are none of them around, and I don't know what kind of references they want. I don't know anyone else here with guinea-pigs, it sounds a bit strange to me. I'll just keep looking.

Re: Looking to adopt in S.E. Ohio

Thank you to all of you who gave me advice. I have decided to drive three hours to Cincinnatti for piggies. If the weather is bad, I may not do it. I plan to get more male piggies, to reside with my boars. However, after some online reading, I am not sure if more than two boars together will work. I am prepared for failure, but would appreciate advice. If you managed to have many boars residing together, advice would be appreciated!
