Adopting a third piggie?

I am looking to adopt my third piggie...I have found a gorgeous young male, who is due to be neutered, so breeding wont be a problem.

Would two three year old girls and a young male work out well?

Re: Adopting a third piggie?

Yes, I believe that they would. I think that males are quite compatible with females. Just make sure to follow the introduction procedures (neutral space, etc) quarantine him and keep him separate until 3 weeks after his surgery.

Re: Adopting a third piggie?

Hi, yeh I have read and re-read the quarantine rules, and will re-read them again when I get him.

Three weeks is enough though? And in a different room to my girls for those three weeks (just want to make sure I have read it right and don't mess this up)?

Yes, and you must wash your hands after handling him, before you handle the other GP's and vise versa.....

Re: Adopting a third piggie?

Males will get along with females if there are more females then males. Also yeah, 3 weeks is the average amount of time a sick cavy will show signs of sickness. And keep him in a different room because the illness maybe airborne.

Re: Adopting a third piggie?

Went to the rescue centre today and the piggy I wanted had been reserved about 10 minutes before we arrived....

...So I caved and am now adopting a male and female pair to add in!

.........I met them and fell in love with them! They both loved being held and sat so still, even when my daughter was poking and stroking them!

Thank you to everyone who has given me advice and help on this.
