Hello Everyone, So this morning I found this ad on Craigslists about a free guinea pig to go to a good home. My question is, is it ok to adopt from Craigslists? I don't want to support pet stores or breeders. But if I want get this pig who will? Here is the ad, Female Guinea Pig free to good home. We just got her and she isn't happy. I think my dogs bother her and she needs someone that can spend more time with her. She is very cute and cuddly. Shy at first, but she warms up. She would make a great pet for kids. She is VERY easy to care for and will come with a large cage, food, guinea pig litter, her water bottle and food tray. Please email me back if you would like to come and see her. I'm sure her cage isn't large by C&C cages which I'm going to order one. This will also be my first pig or should I just go to the animal shelter and and adopt a pair there? Thanks so much for the help and advice. krystalmarie (hopefully becomes a piggie mom soon)

Re: Question about adopting Guinea Pig on Craigslists I don't think you should have an issue adopting her. With the breeders, usually they don't give a crap about cleverly disguising their ads, and they won't straight out tell you, but they don't hide it very well either. There are plenty of triggers in breeder's ads and I don't see any in that one. Of course, I'm just one opinion, but I'd go for it. And even if you are uncomfortable with just getting her, go visit her and look around at the conditions while you're there. It'd be a whole lot easier to assess if the ad was true or not that way.

Re: Question about adopting Guinea Pig on Craigslists Craigslist is fine as long as you aren't getting them from breeders. This sounds like someone that got a pig from a petstore and now no longer wants it for whatever reason. You can always contact the person listing the ad and ask questions.

Re: Question about adopting Guinea Pig on Craigslists I would think if it was a breeder she wouldn't be free. I sometimes think you are doing a pig a favor by adopting out of the paper. Who knows who is going to take it or what kind of care it will receive. If it is free it could go to a reptile. I am all for getting a pig from a rescue don't get me wrong, but they are most of the time in good hands right now and will be adopted out to someone who will love and care for it.

Re: Question about adopting Guinea Pig on Craigslists Well I emailed her and she said that she got the pig from a woman who rescues animals from the shelters and the woman has had her for a few months and wants her to go to a family since she put free she is afraid that she will be snake food. I can't get her until friday so if she is still there on friday I can have her. There is alot of people interested in her I guess. Also she says all she does is sit in her cage or in her roll ball which I'm assuming is the kind for hamsters and rats and I told her they aren't for guinea pigs. Keep your fingers crossed that she is still there for me to get. I hope she doesn't end up in hands that don't know much about guinea pigs.
