International Move Come late August/early September I will be moving from the states to Greece for an unknown amount of time to attend school. It will be anywhere from 4 months to a year or even more depending on my financial situation and if I like it or not. Unfortunately, my parents do not want to keep my guinea pigs in the house while I am gone. So unless I can find a friend willing to take them until I come back, the only solution I can see is giving them to a shelter. The only shelters I know of around here are regular SPCA. I was wondering if anyone knows of any Guinea Pig rescues in the Rhode Island area? I won't be giving them up until right before I leave, I want to spend as much timme with them as I can! ![]()

Re: International Move Instead of having to give them to a shelter, try to find them a new home yourself. You can put listings here, on Guinea Pig Home - Home, Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig, Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten., and craigslist. It would be better for you to find them a new home before you leave for Greece than to hand them over to a shelter. You can ask for an adoption fee and make sure they go to a good home where they will get the care they deserve. You could even offer to sell the cage and supplies with them.

Re: International Move You should probably try to rehome them now, as you are making your plans to move, rather than waiting until you're actually ready to leave. It can take a long time, sometimes, to find the right home and even shelters/rescues often have waiting lists. When I rehomed my pigs, it took over 8 months to find homes.

Re: International Move Perhaps instead of rehoming them permanently, you could put out a listing seeing if anyone would like to take care of them temporarily, as if they're fostering them? Seems like a long shot...

Re: International Move moving pets overseas usually requires quarantine time too I believe.. may have changed in teh past few years, don't know for sure. better to find them a home here in the states - way less stress..

Re: International Move Luckily a friend of mine fell in love with one of the girls so she offered to take care of her while I am gone. I posted them on Craigslist last night and a woman has already contacted me inquiring about one. I told her I'll call her back and discuss details later today. Does any one have any suggestions of questions I can ask to make sure she is ready to take a guinea pig on?
