For Adoption

Hi all! I just wanted to let everyone know that if you are in the area of Anne Arundle Co., Maryland the SPCA has alot of guinea pigs and rabbits for adoption. The guinea pigs are all ages and they have both male and female. Some males have been neutered so call them for more info. The website is SPCA of Anne Arundel County - Annapolis, Maryland Not all of the Guinea Pigs are listed on the website--We were just there on Sat. and brought a little girl home to had to our other 2 sows. Just wanted to pass this along since there are so many there!!

Re: For Adoption

Who did you adopt from there? There are so many cuties on their website, I would have had such a hard time taking home just one!

Re: For Adoption

We adopted Honeycomb. She has the white bottom. She's so cute!! It looks like she has a powder puff on her bottom. The picture doesn't do her justice! I wanted to name her something like that, but my daughters won out. Her name is now Lola. They are Hannah Montana fans can you tell? Miley, Lilly, and Lola? They have so many that it killed us not to bring home more!! Kix was her brother, but he hadn't been neutered yet.

I have a question though...I was told at the shelter that she had been quarentined and is healthy. I have her in a seperate room here for now, but does she have to still be away from the others for the full quarentine time? She seems lonely and keeps calling like she's looking for someone to answer. It's cute, but I don't think she's ever been in a cage alone. We just feel bad for her!

Re: For Adoption

I have always heard that unless you're adopting from a trusted rescue or other private party where you know they weren't exposed to anything, quarantine for the three weeks, unless it seems like the guinea pig starts to be dangerously depressed. Anne Arundel has a small animal room, right? That's better odds, but since it's a shelter I would still play it safe. It could be three weeks for you to get to know her really well before she gets distracted by her guinea pig pals I think people say three weeks because that's how long it takes a URI to manifest.

If she does seem really down though, you could take her to the vet for a check up and see what the vet advised, and maybe get some ivermectin to treat them all?

I hope that was helpful!

Re: For Adoption

Yes they do have a small animal room, but since they have so many they had some (her included) in another building that I wasn't able to go into. You pretty much confirmed what I was thinking so she'll just have to get extra time with us!!

Thanks so much!

Re: For Adoption

I know! I was afraid that one of our girls (she's very bossy!) Would not get along with her. BUT she's been on my mind and I'd love to figure out a way to give her her own cage. So sad!!!

Was there any sort of adoption process, or just the filling out of paperwork?

Re: For Adoption

All we had to do was fill out the paperwork and they were going to try to call our Vet to see if our dog was up to date on shots. (Made no sense to me about the dog since they said nothing about checking on our other two Guinea Pigs!) But they couldn't get in touch with her while we were there, so they just took my word that he was and let us leave with her. There was a $20 adoption fee and that was it!

Re: For Adoption

I saw all three of them there! They weren't shy and came right up to my hand when I put it in the cage. Those three were all housed in the same cage together. Very cute!!
