Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

So, my mom finally cracked. We are going to an adoption center later today but I am unsure if they even have any pigs. I have been checking Craigslist everyday, nothing. I am either looking for a spayed female or a submissive baby/young male on Long Island, New York. I am having quite a bit of trouble finding adoption centers that even take them in, never the less, have them.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Specifically, we are looking for a young, or baby abbysinnian boar.

Just thought that might be important.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Have you checked on petfinder.com and petharbor.com and classifieds? Find it hard to believe you'd have to resort to a breeder.

Breed or looks don't really matter to other pigs. Personality does.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Ditto what rabbitsncavyluv said. Pigs couldn't care less about the color or breed of the other pig. It's honestly the personality that counts most. Wanting an abby or a certain coloring is really only for the owner.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

If you want a certain breed for yourself then be patient and wait til one pops up. One always will. Did you contact your local animal shelters? They can frequently get in guinea pigs but don't post them online or advertise them.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

I am not resorting to a breeder..
I am looking to adopt a pig from possibly a person on craigslist
Those criteria arn't from me, they are from my mom.
My mom is weird. She truly believes that Caramel will have to look at him and recognise him as one that looks like him, even though it is doubtful that he knows what HE looks like.. Ignorance is bliss!

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Oh, and I really don't know of any shelters, except one whom which we visited but didn't have too much. Mainly pregnant sows. That is one reason I posted here. I have tried petfinder, when I search my zip it comes out with places in like Texas and such, no where near.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Have you tried actually calling local animals controls and humane society's? Sometimes they do not put Guinea Pigs on Petfinder, also then if they get one in you could ask them to hold him for you.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Adopt a Guinea Pig in PA/NJ/NY/WV: NY-Craigslist-three boars&one sow

You could try these people. Maybe they would be willing to adopt just one guinea pig to you. They're abbys on Long Island.

Please don't go to a breeder; if your mother thinks that's necessary maybe you could ask her to read some relevant guinea information.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Oh also, I run that website. There are dozens of New York guinea pigs posted each day for adoption if you keep looking. It's very sad.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Someone actually e-mailed that to me. I guess I need to look again but I didn't see any abby's on L.I.
I never once said that I would go to a breeder. I wouldn't ever sink that low. Oh and I have already seen that ad, the boar is not a baby nor is he young for that matter. I would rather get a baby/young one so he may feel as though he should look out for him.

That's not entirely true. You (or your mother?) posted this ad after a GL member emailed you about the importance of adopting Looking For A Guinea Pig Breeder.

Please, don't go to a breeder. There are plenty of GPs in the area to adopt. They do not have to look the same, be near in age or have the same sort of hair. None of my GPs have anything in common. They are all different colors, breeds and ages and they all get along wonderfully.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Oh, that would be mommy.

Don't worry though guys.
I wouldn't get one from a breeder if I got paid.
And I mean that. My mom just thinks she is being smart trying to find a 'perfect' pig and try to tempt me. But I know there are plenty of truly perfect piggy's in shelters too, I will admit I am getting frustrated with the fact I can't seem to find any piggies yet but I guess good things come to those who wait. But thanks VJ for allowing me to adress that.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

I dont mean to come across as mean or anything, but I dont understand why your future pig has to be an abby, has to be young/a baby and preferably the colours brown, orange and white (is that right?)?

It doesnt matter what the pig sitting at the shelter/rescue looks like or how old he is, he still needs a home.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

I know that Ash, but this isn't my preferences these are my mom. My mom is picky as to what she has living in her home. I want it to be a baby or atleast young though because I am just looking for success and am very worried about introductions and have read that a baby or a young one and an adult seem to be the easiest to pair. Though just very recently I talked my mom into liking bassically every other breed, and now she has no prefferable color really, except she doesn't like short hairs, now I have no idea why but that is her and 'she will not be having anything she doesn't like nor want in her house'. I told her, 'Mom, he has no way of knowing how he looks so he isn't going to look at another pig and say, you don't look like me, get away from me, pigs are not racist'.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Not necessarily. It doesnt matter how old they are so long as they are introduced properly. And if you are able to successfully pair a young pig with an adult pig, thats fine, but once the young pig hits puberty a whole lot of problems could and would arise.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

If the shelter has pregnant sows, it sounds like there will be baby boars soon.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

There is two pregnant sows.
So I guess more than likely there will be a boar coming around sometime.
Erghh. I hate this. LOL I am having trouble locating shelters. Does any one know of any classifieds? I tried the petharbor, it would of been more helpful if when I put in my zip I got places actually local.

Re: Looking To Adopt On Long Island!

Mommy of One, my 2 boys are brothers and except for both being short hair, they don't look anything alike and their sister was almost all white. I do have to say though, that I have a preference for abruvians myself, which is why I don't look at petfinder and craigslist. I am afraid I will find one I can't resist and at this time I just don't have the energy for another one.

I hope your mom relaxes a little and you find one a little closer to home.

edited to add: If the one shelter has 2 pregnant sows, even if they are short hair, they could give birth to an abby or two. So keep checking.
