4 Females Up For Adoption in Tampa, FL

We have 4 female guinea pigs that have been together for 2 1/2 years. I am looking to find them a new home with parents who are knowledgable on how to take care of them. While I'd like to place them together, I realize that's not always possible. If I can place them in couples that would be great. I will not seperate them individually...they would get very lonely. So, if you can take 2 guinea pigs then let me know. They are not fixed since they are all the same sex. Please don't chew me out for wanting to rehome them. I am willing to drive up to 100 miles to rehome them (anything farther than that and I'm afraid they'd become too stressed out.) If you'd like to adopt all 4 of them you can have their cage (a CC 5X6 with coroplast. I've also got extra squares to expand the cage if you've got the space...I just didn't)
You can contact me on this thread or email me at Whit23ney@gmail.com

Thank you,
Whitney

Don't worry no one will chew you out for having to rehome your pigs, it happens. You are doing the right thing by looking for responsible owners! Have you tried finding a rescue near you? There are two in Fort Lauderdale according to the link below (I have no idea how far away from you that is.) This link has a list of rescues in several different states Guinea Lynx :: US Rescue Organizations
I am an assistant to the SC Guinea Pig Rescue, but I'm sure Columbia, SC is out of your 100 mile driving range!

Sure it's sad that you have to give away your piggies, but like tulip said, things happen. I've seen adds in the newspaper of people giving away their pigs, to ANYONE! It makes me sick! thank god you care enough about your piggies, I'd take them all myself, but I can't. I don't have the space, plus I live in Tulsa, Ok.
Hope they find a good home together
best of luck!

I've also posted a classified ad in the guineapighomes website. Does anyone have any additional advice on how to expedite the process of finding my piggies a good home? So far it looks like the closest rescue is over 100 miles from me. I don't know where else to look. I'm going to give it another month or so.....

Re: 4 Females Up For Adoption in Tampa, FL

Okay so I posted a classified on the site and almost immediately recieved an email from a potential new home. The email was from jagerboy and the person just said:
I saw that you had 4 females that were in need of a home and I was hoping that I could help.
If you like you can give me a call at (deleted).

While it's great that someone is interested, I am a little cautious about the email being from "jagerboy" and that they didn't include much about themselves. I'm scared that it might be someone who wants them for pet food for another animal. How can you tell? What should I do? I've never re-homed guinea pigs before and I'm not sure what I should look out for. This could be a perfectly nice person who could take care of them....or it could be my worst nightmare.....

If I were you I would write up a page of questions, regarding cage size, the food they are going to be fed, whether they are going to be bred or used as food, whether he has anyother animals etc. I would also do home check, to make sure that what he said in your questionarre is really the truth.

Re: 4 Females Up For Adoption in Tampa, FL

Looks like I might have found them a new home! There's a couple taking a vacation around this part of town and if they like the pics I sent them, they'll pick them up on their way home. They have children and say they'll take good care of them. Hopefully it works out. If it does I'll let you know. Thanks

That's great! Just make sure they are knowledgable about guinea pigs and maybe give them your C&C so you know they are housed properly. Give them this site and guinealynx.com for reference!

Big red flag, in my opinion. Most rescues will not adopt pigs out to people for their children; children grow up, children lose interest, children are not able to be financially or physically responsible for the pet, etc. etc.

I understand that you'd like to rehome as quickly as possible; however, please take your time and look around thoroughly and make the best decision for your pets, rather than the best decision for you. If you are going to rehome your pigs to people for their children, you need to establish beyond a reasonable doubt that the parents will ultimately be the ones responsible for the animals. You also need to find out how old the children are. Children under the age of 7-8 are really not old enough, in my opinion, to even grasp how to properly care for guinea pigs.

When I rehomed my pigs, it took a good 7 months before I found homes I felt comfortable enough sending my pigs to. Please bear in mind that with the huge overpopulation of guinea pigs, it's not easy to find new homes, so it takes time to find ones that are really good.

I took it to mean that the parents would take good care of the pigs. (The THEY referring to the parents and not the children.) Too many pronouns!!

Re: 4 Females Up For Adoption in Tampa, FL

I've spoken to both parents, referred them to do research on this site, and gave them a ton of info in an email "warning" them of exactly how much work will be required. They've assured me that they've been researching guinea pigs for a year now and have decided they want some...but wanted to rescue them. The mother has told me that she will personally care for them. On the note about children having to be at least 7 or 8 to care for them??? Perhaps my daughter is an exception but she has been feeding them pellets, hay, veggies, and water since she was 4....she's now almost 7. She takes phenominal care of them. I have to clean their cage of course and I'm the one who picks them up for her to hold them and puts them away when she is finished holding them, but she has always been awesome with them. Anyways, I'm def making sure they will be cared for properly. They are used to being held by her and they have a daughter her age. I think it's a good fit. Now a days they aren't being cared for as well as they have been in the past. My daughter hardly ever holds them anymore and our finances are tight so their daily veggie allowance is a head of romaine lettuce (as apposed to what they should be getting.) They are getting crappy pellets and hay instead of the good stuff. These people say they have a lot of money so they can afford to buy them the best. I'm confident they will be better off with their new owners when they are rehomed. We also have a new baby so it's hard for me to find time to clean their cage every week and their nails are in dire need of trimming which I'm scared out of my mind to do cause I always seem to make one of them bleed. They deserve a better home and they're going to get one. Thanks for the concern,Whitney
