Good news, I've adopted a male named Sammy. Use the Craigslist for a nearby state. This little piggy is so sweet. I will be bringing him in to the vet on Friday. I had to make a few modifications to his cage since he has to be quarrentined there for a while right? He was being kept with a rabbit in a rabbit cage, meaning he was walking on wire grids. I do not see any injury to his feet, but i will leave that diagnosis to the vet. I measured cardboard for the bottom of the cage and then placed bedding on top of it. On the top floor I place cardboard under the kitchen area. He seems so happy. He ate like a little piggy veggies and lots of hay, got his fill an then went to lie down in the bedding like it was a down filled mattress. He was out like a lite until filling time again. Lots of weeking and he doesn't really know me. I can't wait until he meets my other little fellow. I was told he is a year old and if that's correct then my little guy is much younger just judging by size. I will keep you updated. My daughter is soooo happpy. |

Congratulations BlaireD! I am so happy for you and your new addition to the family. Our new addition is a handful. She not like Gina she's a wild one (I probably should have named her wild cat). Gina is laid back but Semaj jumps around wanting to play all the time. Once again congratulations on your new piggie. |

I have a young male piggy in a 2x4 C&C Cage and I want to rescue a piggy for him so he will have company! I found an altered female close by, is it ok to put male and female together if the female is fixed, or should I get another male? My Frankie is very friendly and outgoing, and he is about 4 months old. I have read on this site to make sure of the sex of your piggy before adopting another, and I read the instructions on how to sex them and tell them apart, and my Frankie is DEFINITELY male, I checked him like 6 times! Any answers will be appreciated. |

If you are absolutely certain the female is spayed then yes she can go in with a male. |

Ok, thank you! There is also a few males nearby at shelters, will my male get along better with a female or a male, or does it just depend? When and if I go to see the fixed female at the shelter is there a way to tell if she is fixed? Thanks in advance for advice! |

Already spayed sows are really hard to come by. It's easier to neuter the male. Less invasive. But it is easiest to do a same sex pairing. |

Shelters don’t typically spay or neuter GPs so I would definitely question how the shelter came to that determination. |

There's a rescue in Knoxville http://www.guinealynx.info/rescues.html Did you check your local animal shelters and craigs list? |

Checked all in the link you provided, and none came up. Knoxville is a whopping six hour drive from Memphis so that is absolutely out of the question. Yes, There are guinea pigs on craigslist but I want to be able to get exactly the age and gender of a guinea pig that I want to be able to cater to the one I have. Chances are these same cavys came from a petco as those seem to be the only place that I have found as well... so it is starting to seem as though I am better off straight up buying one from a petco. |

Most of the pigs in rescues originally came from pet stores, too, and they won’t always know their exact ages. You’d have the benefit of having them properly sexed and health checked (most of the time) through a rescue, but they aren’t magical places with pedigreed pigs. They just happen to be the second-to-last stop for all the unwanted pet store and Craigslist pigs that inevitably end up at a shelter anyway. Have you researched how to sex pigs? I’m not 100% confident in my ability so I took my two “female” CL pigs with the understanding that if they turned out to be male, I could either return them or find a suitable home myself. Thankfully, I got it right but neither of their previous owners wanted them back or seemed to care how I might have re-homed them. I understand that you might be hesitant to take in an unknown pig if you can only have one more and need it to be compatible with the one you already have. But, there are no guarantees and Petco certainly isn’t the way to go about having a pleasant experience. Educate yourself, find a good vet and contact a GP rescue. Even if it doesn’t work out for you to get a GP from them, they will help you make the best choices for both you and the pig you already have. |

On top of that, a pig you buy there is likely to be sick. |

The shelters in my area ONLY take in dogs and cats! So where do people take unwanted piggies? I want to adopt two or three more for my gizmo to have company! |

Yeah I've called the shelters here and rescue organizations around me and they only take dogs and cats. Look on craigslist and the classifieds you'll find one. It may take time but they are out there. Also if you get one from craigslist make sure to do a quarantine as you have no idea what they have been living in. It may also cost you more money in possible vet bills but if you can do it I would. |

For those who have long drives to the nearest rescues some rescues will meet you halfway after they approve you for adoption. Also, members from this forum and others like guinealynx can help set up piggie trains for very long distant trips. I live in the middle of no where in central Michigan. I've adopted three pigs from seven hours away and I had dozens of forum members offering their help to get them to me. As far as buying from Petco: one of the main reasons to not buy from a petstore is so that you don't support the vicious breeding cycle. Sure, most of the pigs that are up for adoption on craigslist probably came from a pet store, but so do most of the pigs in rescues. But adopting them from someone off of craigslists means you aren't feeding money to Petco and their breeding machine. |
