Have you posted over at Guinealynx in the placement section? There may be a way that you could organize a 'piggy train" to help transport to you if you can locate piggys within a few hours or so from you. Please keep in mind that when you apply to adopt at any of the rescues you will need to have your c&c cage built and ready for potential pigs. I'll do some research and see what I can find in your area.

We just got our little Gina 2 days ago. I am willing to adopt another female (2 piggies is all the room we have to accomdate there needs, and Gina needs a playmate). We are new to this but are dedicated to keeping her healthy and happy. I would love anyone that can help me with some advice to help find Gina a playmate. (The petstore gave me bad advice so I don't want to go get Gina a playmate from them). Any ideas on which direction to go will gladly be appreciated!

Where are you located? If you can tell us where you are at maybe we can locate a rescue or shelter near you.

I am in New Orleans, LA. After I read some of the comments and links I did find on rescue that is not to far and emailed the person with contact information. But anymore ideas and directions will be welcomed.

Thanks socal805. Researching and building up knowledge has become another full time job for me. Just to make sure I am doing everthing right. I have read almost every section on care, nutrition, cages (me and my son built her a new cage yesterday) and her behavior just so we know what to do and not to do. And I am still reading just to make sure I do anything wrong to jeapordize her welfare. Oh by the way she is spoile rotten already!

Oh good, you're becoming a cavy slave already! I am sure she appreciates all that you are doing for her. I don't know if you have started weighing her weekly yet but I found my digital scale on Amazon

Guinealynx has printable weight charts which are really great for tracking their weight. It definitly gives me a peace of mind when I weigh all 5 pigs every week and can see that everyone is normal.

Have you looked on petfinder for pigs in your area?

No, I haven't but I surely will now! I got her from the pet store. Is there a way to estimate her age? When I checked her everything is small, but hey what do I know. To me she's small and vulnerable. But I would love to know if there is at least a way to estimate her age.

Amsley246, I don't about everyone, but I am and I am taking in all this knowledge like a sponge and will continue to! I have learned more here in the past 2 days than anything in my life (crash course mind you) but alot of knowledge! And we are ready for a playmate for our Gina.

Hi, I'm in New Orleans and run a rescue. Right now I don't have any pigs up for adoption but I have seen multiple GPs up for homing on Craigslist. Keep searcing there (in pets, general and free sections).

The SPCA on the Westbank often gets in GPs. You may want to stop in there. Magic Happens Rabbit rescue in Baton Rouge also takes in GPs http://www.magichappensrescue.com/ You may also want to give Dr. Rich at West Esplanade Vet clinic a call. He sometimes has GPs looking for homes gregrichdvm.com

HELLO EVERYONE! (sorry for the caps but I am so excited) went to the Petco today to get Gina some hay. Well searching the different little things and items on the isle I heard a conversation between the sales person and one of the customers. This is the conversation. Lady "Hi I have a guinea pig had babies about 4 months ago. I can't take care of them anymore and was wondering could I give them to you or would you know anyone that wants them?" Salesperson "Sorry no I don't take them to the pound they will take them." Me "Ma'am sorry to but into ur conversation but I overheard that you were looking for a home for guinea pigs." I am looking for a female if you are trying to get find them a home, I just adopted a female and I can only take one female." Lady (Rita) "This is absolutely wonderful, I have boys and one girl." Me "If you can meet me back here at 5:15 because I get off work at 5:00 I would love to have her." Well needless to say she meet me at 5:00 and gave us our new edition to the family Semaj! (And for the record she asked every question she possibly could before she handed her over to me) Thanks to this site I was knowledgeable enough for Rita to be at ease when handing over Semaj to me.

New Piggie, I live in New Orleans also and have been looking for a male for my daughter. We initially got the first on from Petco in Slidell. She is doing very well with him. I think that he's lonely though. Didn't know that they needed a playmate when I first got him until I started on this site. Do you know if the Lady Rita still has any of the males? Also do you have any info on where I can get the supplies for a c&c cage here. Thanks for any help.

I didn't even get her contact information (I'm sorry), everything went so quick I didn't even think to ask her. I went to Walmart, Kmart, Home Depot and couldn't find the grids. What I did was go back to Home Depot and bought the medium closet racks and cut them to size (you will have to get large bolt cutters) then duct taped them together then got the quick ties and put them over the duct tape for extra stability. Because I couldn't find coroplast, I bought 2 large flat bottom bins from Walmart cut the bottoms out of them for the floor, and I used the sides from the bins for the sides of the cage. With the three sides I made, I tied them to the store bought cage.
Not quite as fancy as some of the others I've seen but I did discover that the closet racks can be cut to any size you wish. The bins on the other hand were the most difficult part. I had to use an exacto knife to cut it.
