Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

I have to say that the key to this is getting the word out somehow.

I was one of those that was going to buy a piggie..Or get one from a friend who owns a pet store. If I didn't find one to adopt, I was going to buy one since I wanted to give it as a gift to my son who has wanted one. (PLEASE no lectures about kids with piggies, he's ready and I am going to really be doing all the work and happy to )Well, thanks to the help of Socal and many others in the forums, I am completely NOT ever going to buy one. All it takes is doing some research and seeing the many beautiful little piggies that are in such need. AND it keeps growing!
It's SO sad and I cannot wait to adopt two little ones to bring them out of their temporary homes. I am having no luck either..but it's been close. So that has just motivated me to do some more research and keep trying. I decided I am going to set up the cage and put everything in it AND the best part is that I am going to print a picture of a cute guinea pig and put it in the cage. This way my son will know he got one for Christmas but then realize that we did not get it yet. We will tell him that we will all look for one/two to adopt. It will be a happy family thing to do. I cannot wait!

Thanks Socal. You have been great! Everyone who helped in my other threads..thanks so much!

Let's try to somehow get the word out there. How great would it be to have a commercial telling people to go look to adopt ALL kinds of animals instead of buying. I know it would be so expensive to do that..but too bad we cannot find someone who can.
Well..thank goodness that some check the internet. I honestly did not even realize this was happening. I guess I was ignorant so to speak.

BOY HAVE I LEARNED.

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

Oh my gosh you just brought tears to my eyes. I really feel that if we can just keep trying to make people understand what wonderful animals there are sitting around the country waiting for homes then we can make a difference. I honestly feel like it is my purpose in this life to help animals and if I can help find homes for even just one then I have done something good. I think the cage idea with the picture is wonderful. You are teaching your son a valuble lesson about animal adoption and I am sure he will carry it with him his whole life!

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

Thanks Socal. You are a blessing to those little piggies who need homes.

As far as my son, he is such a sweet child and he will definitely be learning a wonderful life lesson. He is looking forward to adopting and he knows he is doing a great thing. He talks about protecting the environment too. So he is all for helping in any way that he can.
He thinks he is getting them in May for his birthday. So this will be a wonderful surprise during the holidays.
I look forward to the search with him. It should be alot of fun!

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

I agree with everyone. This is such a shame and before I came across this site I would have be stupid and gotten a petstore pig. But now I know better. I look at my local SPCA website everyday and the MGPR as well. I found a awesome link from this site that shows me all the guinea pig shelters in this area, VA,and PA. There is one piggie that I like but I was considering females and he's a male but the thought of him sitting there in cage waiting to be euthanized and it kills me so I may adopt him. Once of course I'm ready. Thank you all for your help and showing me adopting is the better way.

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

I only have one piggy too. I hope it's not making him horribly unhappy. I looked on petfinder with no luck as well. Craigs list and newspaper just makes me nervous because if they are trying to hide it I don't think I would know if it was a breeder. I'll keep looking and hoping there is something I can do. Good luck with yours.

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

I would love to adopt one more male guinea pig. I've been looking in craigslist, petfinder, and calling my local shelters. I have not been able to locate one. I will wait until I find a boy to "rescue". I've been hoping the right boy will come along again. Do you have any suggestions? I live in Florence, Alabama with zip code of 35633. I appreciate any ideas or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Kat's Kritters Guinea Pig Rescue

The link says she is willing to drive up to 3 hours to place her babies. Perhaps this is an option?

Take a look at this
Guinea Lynx :: Topic - Available pigs Birmingham, AL

Also if you find a pig listed on Craigslist or in the paper you can call and talk to the person, ask a ton of questions, ask why they are needing to re-home the pig. If they say they have several pigs they are giving away then they could be a breeder. Ask if males and females were housed seperatly. Also call your local spca and shelters and ask them if they get guinea pigs in. If you make it a habit to check craigslist and your paper every day then you should have some luck.

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

socal805, I have been emailing with the person in Birmingham, Al. I know I want at least 1 of the boys they have, but, I'm thinking of getting all 3! I hate the idea of picking only 1 and then the other 2 not be picked. If my husband will not divorce me. I had a question if you could help, or if anyone could answer for me. I currently have 4 boys in a 3x6 c&c cage. What size cage would be needed if I got all 3 rescues and ended up with a total of 7 piggies? I have extra coroplast and extra grids, so there should be no trouble updating cage. Does anyone else have that many in one cage and do they do well in that large a herd? I would appreciate any feedback or opinions. Thanks in advance!

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

I am so glad that you are thinking about getting them!
I don't have boys so I'm not sure about having so many in one cage. I do know that the bigger the better with boys, what you have is already pretty darn big. If it were me I would make it a 3x8 or bigger if you have the space. I think anything smaller than 3x8 would be too small.
Do you know if the 3 boys are already living together?? If so you might consider getting all 3 and housing them seperate from your other boys, just a thought! You also might want to ask over at guinealynx about housing so many boys together, maybe someone there has more experience. Please keep us posted!

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

Socal805,
I just wanted to keep you and everyone else updated about me getting a new boy to adopt. After finding out the 3 boys in Birmingham, Al were taken, I started looking in other states more, and located Kimmie's Guinea Pig Rescue. She has the sweetest looking boy named Marvin on there. Has anyone else ever met or talked or adopted from them before?

I emailed her last night to see if he or another boy is available for adoption and have not heard back yet. My email does not work on my computer sometimes so I left my message on their answering machine. I was so excited and nervous over Marvin that I think I left my husband's cell number on there instead of my own!

Please everyone keep their fingers and paws crossed that this works out for us! My husband is not excited about me driving 4 hours to Atlanta, Ga and 4 hours back, but he'll get over it, after all guinea pigs are worth it!!!

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

Good luck and let us know. Perhaps you could find somewhere in the city your husband would really like to go and visit there before picking up the baby so he can feel it was worth it too.

Re: Can't Find Pigs To Rescue??

I just wanted to add here that both of my piggies came from my local freecycle site one from a good home that just had too many and one from a terrible home. But the whole point here is that there are many piggies out there that need a loving home. check your local craigs list and freecycle you'd be surprised at what you see.
