Too Far? Why?

I found a guinea pig in Ontarion, ON. Her name is Martha. She has been at that shelter for a couple of months now, and everytime I go to look and see if anymore piggies came into my local shelter, her picture is there staring at me. It is almost like fate. That in the fact that everytime I tried to rescue a piggie friend for my guinea, something went wrong...it had already been adopted, had the wrong personality, etc. and even just reading the information about Martha gave me goosebumps to how closely her personality and actions sound like my guinea pig.

One problem though...the shelter Martha is at is 2 and a half hours from me, so a total of about 5 hours of a drive total. My mom wouldn't even drive 45 minutes to the SPCA unless I begged her and when I mentioned this she said she didn't want to spend the money in gas to drive that far for a guinea pig.

So, I am stuck. I want to get Dixie a friend and absolutely love Martha. However, 5 hrs total drive is too far and the only way I can adopt a guinea pig is if the whisker wagin' (takes adoptable SPCA animals to local places to adopt them) comes to the petsmart down the road (10mins away) and there is a guinea pig there.

Re: Too Far? Why?

I drove four hours once. But that is a ways. It's all depending on what you and your family is willing to drive. You could offer to pay for gas if that's an issue. Or maybe you could call the shelter and do you offer to bring Martha half way?

Re: Too Far? Why?

Talk to the shelter. They (or a volunteer) might be able to help you out and drive part or all of the way. I certainly did it enough when I was volunteering... and I didn't even like the one dog. (He was pretty unadoptable- real aggression issues, and this was a rural shelter with very limited space that got absolutely wonderful dogs all the time that had to be put down... why couldn't one of them be saved?) So, anyway- they will probably be willing to work with you.

Thanks, I will mention that to the shelter. Maybe they can work something out.

Where are you located? Maybe we could set up a piggy train.

Re: Too Far? Why?

Hmm maybe you could set up a piggy train. I'm sure some people are on the way. Where excately did you say the piggy you looking at was? Is it in Canada or somewhere else?

Re: Too Far? Why?

Yeah, I would talk to the shelter first because some organizations have an adoption radius. If you live outside the radius you might have to go to another rescue. Hopefully they don't and will be able to figure out something.

Re: Too Far? Why?

Yea, I'll try calling. I have some more good news too. The SPCA near me just had a female guinea pig surrendered to them. Her name is Leah and she has long white fur. She will be on the whisker wag'n on sunday so we're going to go and meet her. I will let you know how it works out. If it doesn't I am going to see about Martha.

Re: Too Far? Why?

I'm sure one of them will. I am really excited. I have the quarintine cage all ready in the spare bedroom downstairs, an extra t-shirt, etc. Actually, I have been ready for a while but, everytime I went to try and adopt it didn't work out. Hopefully it will though.

Re: Too Far? Why?

Are you referring to Martha at Guinea pigs r us? I just adopted two piggies from there last week. They were actually being fostered through a different place. The lady that was fostering them meet me half way. Do you know where Martha is exactly?

Yea she was at guinea pigs r us. I was just on petfinder though and didn't see her on there. I assume she must have been adopted.
