rescued male in need of home - indiana We rescued a male gp yesterday. He was not mistreated intentionally, but was owned by a family that was not informed on guinea pig care (small glass tank, cedar chips for bedding, no veggies except the occaisonal carrot as a treat, no floor time, no hay). We took him to the vet today, with the intent of keeping him with our two existing gp after his quarantine. He is completely healthy - no mites, no fleas, no diarhea, no sneezing or coughing, lungs and heart sound good. He weighs 737 grams, so he is not full grown, but we don't know how old he is. The vet also informed us that he is a he...we thought he was a she. We are not prepared to keep a male permanently, so will foster him until we can find some one to take him. He deserves a great home. Can anyone take him? I will be willing to share driving distance for the right family.

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana Could you neuter him so he could stay with the girls? Mango is still a great name for boy. If you can't, I hope the right family comes along for him.

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana We are looking into it. According to the threads I have read on this forum, there is a lot of risk, especially if you cannot find an experienced vet. I have the number of a different vet recommended by our regular vet, so we are going to look into it. I just am not optimistic, and would rather find him a loving home where he can stay the way he is.

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana I am very interested in your male gp. I already have 2 boars who are about 4yrs. I have been thinking of getting at least one more. I am able to complete the quarantine in a separate room, and separate cage. I use C&C cage with towels and fleece, and feed Oxbow pellets and hay. Where are you in Indiana?

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana I am in Elkhart, IN 46517. I looked online and it shows almost a 6 hour drive. I would be willing to meet you half way, if you decide to take him. I do want to let you know that we are wavering on possibly keeping him, depending on if the vet we referred to has a good track record of neutering. If we can have it done without putting him at much risk, we might.

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana I recently neutered my male so that he could live with a female... there were some complications (mainly infected incisions).... but seeing him and his new girly all happy together made it worth it. my advice is to use your best judgement, if he's healthy and you keep your eye on any possible complications, there's no reason he can't come out of it with no problems. but again, it's totally up to you and your judgement. it seems like he'll be in a happy home regardless.

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana I understand. Actually, I hope you are able to find a good cavy vet and get him neutered. You are probably already attached to him, as I would be! But, I am still interested if things don't work out.

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana Wheeksunlimited - Thank you for being interested in helping Mango, but we were finally able to get a highly recommended vet to return our call! I am so sorry it took so long to respond, but we were just able to find out on Wednesday that we were going to be able to have the surgery done. It will cost more than we hoped, but not more than we are willing and Mango will be able to stay with us. The bad part is that his surgery isn't scheduled until June 19th, and then he will need to be kept away from the girls for four more weeks after that! I really think he will be so much happier when he can join them.

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana That is wonderful that your are able to keep him. Ask the doctor if you can be place on a call list for if any days that open up, like if some one cancels their surgical appointment. You maybe able to get in sooner.

Re: rescued male in need of home - indiana The doctor thought that some one else had given me the information that I needed, which is why it took him so long to get back to me. I actually had to call on the emergency number and said "I don't know how else to get the doctor to return my call." He called that night and left me his cell phone number , because he is out of the office beginning Wednesday (yesterday) until next Tuesday. He did say that if the appointment was offered too far out, to leave him a message and he would try to work him in sooner, especially since he was a rescue. Unfortunately, we will not know until after he gets back next week. This vet came highly recommended by a local small animal rescue because he has a genuine interest in the animal's well being .

Next week we will take Strawberry out of quarantine and introduce her to Coconut and Papaya, so he will have one more girlie in his harem to swagger for! Then, two weeks after that, he can meet the girls, up close and personal. I just hope he doesn't get too or personal |
