I would definitely NOT recommend taking Dixie with you. Go to the shelter, pick whichever sow appeals to you, bring her home, quarantine her for 3 weeks, and then introduce her to Dixie. Being that it is an SPCA and not a dedicated guinea pig rescue, I wouldn't want you to risk getting Dixie sick from something that a shelter vet might not have noticed and treated for. |

Excellent point, Percys Mom. You can tell by reading listings on Petfinder that lots of shelters who specialize in cats or dogs are very unfamiliar with the needs of guinea pigs. I saw one listing where the shelter had two piggies & didn't know if they had males or females. Dixiedoo I am so glad you are getting closer to a piggy companion. This has been a lon search for you. Let us know who comes home with you. |

Thanks so much I won't take her. What should I do if the two females there are friends? I would feel so bad if I adopted one and left the other there all alone. Wouldn't it usually say 'must be adopted together'? I am going to call Monday when they're open and ask if they are good companions but, I'm not sure what to do. |

Some shelters may not say they need to be adopted together because they want to get rid of them however they can, or they aren't aware that pigs become attatched to eachother. Usually the surrenderer has to fill out a basic form when they bring the pigs in. Ask for some history on them. If they've lived together for a long period of time they are most likely bonded and it would be sad for them to be seperated. |

One way to tell if the shelter that you're going to has a good understanding of guinea pigs is to see if any of their postings say "must be adopted together". Then you'll know that they understand that piggies bond. Good luck, I hope you find the piggy girl you're looking for. |
