Re: Looking for a boar in NC

As of last Saturday, the pet store in Mebane still had the babies from the Orange County shelter. I took a quick peak, and both americans seemed to be male, but the owner of the store didn't want me messing with them very much. According to the shelter, the babies will be 3 weeks old on Tuesday. They will need to be treated for mites, they aren't getting veggies, and they aren't getting hay. The adoption fee is $15, and the pet store itself is screening the applicants (which basically seems to involve asking "Hey, are you going to eat this guinea pig".)

Dad is also there, and he has been neutered.

Also, if you'd rather go through a rescue, I believe that Patricia at the South Carolina Rescue just got some younger boys in a dump, and I'd be happy to help transport if you can't swing it.

Cool. I might run out there tomorrow if I can figure out where it is. Do they definitively have mites?

Re: Looking for a boar in NC

Probably, they're all very itchy. Even if they weren't itching, I'd recommend treating for mites for any pig from a shelter environment.

Damn you're fast, .

Am I going to be horrified by the place? Pet stores damage my soul.

Re: Looking for a boar in NC

Oh, and is the mite treatment going to cost an arm and a leg? I'm reading up right now.... seems like I need a vet?

Re: Looking for a boar in NC

As far as pet stores go, it's not too bad. There are very few animals overall, and most are kept in at least decent sized cages, have food and water, and are not in bad shape (no wounds, etc). The lady seems very well meaning, and does seem to care about the animals she has there, but just isn't very knowledgable about pig care and doesn't see the "big picture" with selling.

Re: Looking for a boar in NC

On the mites, you can treat by yourself, with either ivermectin (non prescription) or revolution, the instructions are over at Guinealynx. When I took my first two to the vet and had them treated there, it was about $62, IIRC, and $50 of that was the checkup fee!
