Question Please help me locate a pig!

Hello all,

I am a new guinea pig owner, and have 2 currently. In the future i would like to adopt a guinea pig, as i have learned so much about the negatives of pet stores from this site and forum. The only problem is, i don't know where to find a guinea pig that needs a home!

I live in Omaha, NE. I can not drive very far as my car is not very reliable and do not want to buy a new one because it would come out of my emergency savings (which i would use for any vet bills, school, ect).

I might be able to borrow a car if absolutely necessary. I have already checked petfinder, craigslist, this forum, and guineapighome.com and have not found anything in the area. I saw that there used to be a guinea pig rescue in bellevue, NE which is nearby, but it was from 2001 and contacting the person fell through.

If any of you know of any shelters, or any guinea pigs in the south eastern Nebraska area please let me know (I am near other states such as Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas, and might be able to go to those areas if i have too)

If you have any other ideas on where to find a pig needing a home that would also be appreciated! I also guess i could check the classifieds in local newspapers, so I'll get on that!

*also, this does not need to be immediately, i do not mind waiting for one to come up! it also would need to be a boar or a spayed female, as my current piggies are boars and i do NOT need babies.

thank you in advance,

--Brittany

Re: Please help me locate a pig!

I don't know of any rescues or shelters in your area - I'm in CA. But I did want to say that timing is key as well. It's very possible that when you ARE ready to adopt a third there may be a listing in Petfinder, Craigslist, or some of the other places you mentioned - so be sure to keep checking those.

However, I also think that at some point folks will post other shelters/rescue information in response to this post - so I'm sure you'll find your 3rd when you're ready.

Re: Please help me locate a pig!

There's a boar listed on petfinder right now in Kernersville, NE. I don't know how close that is to you. His name is Buddy and he is 2 years old. I would say to continue monitoring Petfinder. Also, shelters often do not list small animals on their websites, so it might pay to call any that are close to you to see if they have any pigs. Also watch the local papers for anyone wanting to get rid of their pets.

I would suggest not putting a spayed female in with several boars. It can cause fighting among the boars. I would look for another boar, myself. It is highly unlikely you will find a spayed female. The surgery for that is more complicated than neutering a male and few vets are qualified to do it.

Re: Please help me locate a pig!

Try calling your local shelters. Most of them will not take guinea pigs in to rehome, however, most of them are required to accept them and then they call private citizens or local groups to come and pick them up. You need to simply ask them, if someone did drop of a guinea pig, who would they call, that will be a great point of contact to find out where the pigs are in your area.
