I saw this little piggy on petfinder, and I am in love. Can anyone give me tips on how to be the best adoptor? It is a 4 hour drive and I don't want to go there and not get her. Thanks! Petfinder PetNotes

Oh, she's gorgeous.

So.. I would be honest, friendly, and even gather a few refferences from people who can prove I'm a good owner. I've never adopted before, that's just what I would do.

Why don't you give them a call and introduce yourself, and ask them what they require. They'll see that you're really serious that way, and when you come in they'll already be familiar with you (like applying for a job). You can then try and have what they want all ready. I would imagine they check to see if you have a criminal record and will need references. They'll probably want to know where you'll be keeping her, so if you already have a C&C cage you could photograph it and bring it in. They might want to have your parents' consent if you're underage. I love her hair! Is that a certain kind of pig or just the way her hair turned out?

Oh my! She is a little gem. You may also want to mention when you call that you are a member of the forum over here since the site is mentioned in the description. Check with them if she is bonded with Michelle or not. It says that she is "paired" with her, so you might have to adopt them together.

It says Michelle is the mom of Sugar, so I would imagine they are paired.

Edit: I am a little confused who is paired with who actually. I really only wanted Lily because I have two males and onefemale. I would like to have these boys neutered to make a little "herd" but I don't want them to kill each other over the female, which is why I was opting for one more female.

But you do know that your idea of a herd of two males and two females won't work, don't you? The males will always fight over no matter how many females if you keep them together in one cage. They will only be happy if each male gets "his own" harem and both groups are separated. Neutering won't help at all.

I find it hard to believe hat you have a group of two males and one female together and not fighting.

Thats crazy having to have a criminal record check! Here in the UK they take ages and cost money! Totally pointless as even if you are a criminal as you can still be a good owner. Nuts!! And seriously how many people have a criminal record for abusing animals, they rarely get prosecuted.

We don't even have to have references here in the UK, just a home check if you are not familar to the animal sanctury.

Have you rang yet Rustbucket? I would suggest getting in as soon as possible.

Here some rescues with a bigger budget do it simply to avoid people with animal cruelty convictions or pending charges being given animals. It happens alot more than we care to think in spite of extensive screening. If you do them in quantity, you can do them for a pretty low rate. The company I work for does them and because we pull so many it is a flat rate that is less than $5.00 per case.

Yeah, it sounds odd that they would check to see if you have a record, and maybe they don't, I'm not certain. However I've knew someone with a "shady" background once who was not allowed to adopt from our local shelter; they are quite picky at the shelter (with good reason), and I think this factor was among several others on which they based their decision. For example it was also quite obvious that she moved around a lot.

In terms of how the shelter sees it, if you had a record for possession of pot in your early twenties it would be a different story than having one for assault and battery; I agree that it completely possible to be a great pet owner and still have a record
