My pets are my life, literally if I didn't have them around nothing would be the same. I just love um, well most of the time :P |

Today I found a table cloth for a dollar so I am going to use that as bedding, and see how it goes. I am also using these cloth wipes I got for a dollar too on top of the table cloth. I got 16 of the wipe cloths for a dollar. I also found linolium at dollar tree, you get 3 12"x12" tiles peices of linolium. I may use that and peice together another cage made of of linolium and cubes. I haven't decided yet. I will have to see if it costs less to just buy a sheet of coroplast. I like exploring my options. So far planning the rescue is going ok but I only have my friend and me that are involved and no one else seems interested. They all said they were too busy etc.

Sounds like you're off to a great start. Make sure you publicize! Also, make up contracts and procedures before you start. Good luck!

I think that is a little much to charge. Even with all the expenses, if people see your price, many people won't adopt from you, they will go to a pet store or something. Just my opinion. :-) Good luck!!

My petstore is good, and they handle their animals. But yea, I know that most petstores arn't good. I think you should have the adoption fee of $15-20. IIf people adopt pigs from you, you could make sure they get into a great home, where they will be loved and cared for. You could even give the new owners little care booklets. Yes, guinea pigs arn't cheap..LoL I paid $30.00 for mine. It is all worth it.

I think your aoption fees are right up there with others I have seen. People who object to the price are going to go to a petstore anyway, they won't even consider looking into rescue. I know in dog rescue, there is a price on the rescues because only those who are serious about wanting a pet and committing to that pet will pay that. I know I recently adopted a piggy from a rescue. I paid $30 for her and drove 90 miles to get her. It would have been much easier and faster for me to make a 5 min drive to the local petshop and plunk down my $9. I do think, as with other resuces, that you only adopt in pairs or if you adopt a singleton, make sure they have an exisiting pig already. If you want to charge $25 for a singleton, I think you should have a slightly reduced price for a pair...like $40 for a pair.

I payed $400 for my Chihuahua and she was 10 when I got her, and she had hidden problems that they neglected to tell us about like her congestive heart failure, her enlarged heart, and her 3.5 heart murmur, and loss of bladder control. I mean I love her to death but for the price I payed for her and for all her problems it was not worth $400 dollars. I will lower the price for older pigs like $20 but with young pigs it will stay at $25 becuase a lot of people just buy baby animals and then dump them when they aren't so cute and little any more. Oh ya my dog is from a rescue. Sorry forgot to tell ya all!! Last edited by cinn&sprinslave : 09-12-04 at 03:55 pm. |

In my petstore...they rarely have guinea pigs, but when they do they sell them for like $40.00...It's ridiclous for a petstore to do that...

Another question many of you know that I have been looking for a male pig to adopt, well would it be so bad of me not to adopt another pig since I am starting a rescue? I was hoping I could just keep one of the rescues after I start. Um also I have boughten him a bunch of new toys, and other accessories for his cage to keep him occupied. I really feel like I don't want to adopt another pig right now. I have even added three other ramps to his cage. There are other pigs in my house so it's not like he is totally alone, he can still smell them and stuff. I just haven't been able to find the right pig that I can adopt, they either get adopted before I can get to the HS or it doesn't work out.

Re: Rescue??? As soon as you can find another, take the chance as soon as you can. At least you know pigs are being adopted! I agree with NoVeil, just keep the prices there. This is nothing compared to the other expenses. How much does the Humane Society ask? That's a good thing to go after, as they're being adopted, too. Good luck!

Re: Rescue??? Ok, thanks! I still think that since you are paying for them, you'll end up in the deep end if you don't keep the prices a bit higher than the HS's. Good luck!
