looking for a friend for lonely girl piggie in Iowa - Guinea Pig Cages, Care, Store, Photos of Guinea Pigs and More Forum!

Hi - We had 2 little sister piggies that had always lived together and one got suddenly ill and passed away before I could get her to the vet (we think she got a hold of the timothy hay bag and ate it, not the hay the bag!) anyway it was very sad. Several months have gone by and I have finally convinced my husband that piggies are herd animals and really need to be housed together. I have a 2x4 C&C cage so I have plenty of room for another, now the problem is locating a girl. Our local animal shelter doesn't seem to have many guinea pigs and when they do they are usually boys. I could get a boy and have him neutered but I'd really prefer a girl. I have written to a shelter in the Chicago area and am waiting for a response, we are about 2 1/2 hours west of there. According to their website they don't adopt out of their area but I thought it was worth a try.

Anyway, I thought the best place to post was here. If anyone knows who I can call or has a girl that needs a great home please let me know.

You mentioned shelters, but did you remember to check Petfinder?

That is where I would look first.

Thanks, I have spent hours and hours on Petfinder. That is where I found the Critter Corral in the Chicago area, there is just nothing in my area. I'll keep checking though, I'm sure the info gets updated regularly.

Go to the adopt section on Guinea Lynx :: * * * * * . I know I have seen tons of GPs up for adoption in the Chicago area listed there.

I have been on that site and several others they had listed but didn't see any females. I would like to find one closer to home but the Chicago area is definitely doable. Thanks for the advice, I knew I would find help here.

What part of Iowa are you from? I'm in SE MN and close to the IA border. I have several females that would make a great friend to yours and mine need a new home only because I am not home enough. Thanks

I am about 15 minutes west of the Quad City Area (Davenport) which is right on the Iowa/Illinois border so I have no idea how far that would be from you, I have never been to Minnesota. If I knew what city you were in I could use mapquest to figure out how far away you are. Let me know and thanks for the response.

If your still looking there are 6 guinea pigs in Muscatine they are packed wall to wall in their guinea pig room. They never post on petfinder but I stopped by 2 days ago when I was getting horse supplies at the feed store nearby. Then I have 1 at least that I need to find a home for. I'm in Coralville/Iowa City area and travel to West Liberty nearly daily. I'm not sure how far I can travel to meet someone since I have a severely ill horse and he's required pretty much 24 hour care from last month until the past week but davenport isn't real far. Which is why I haven't been on the forum in about 2months. My boyfriend has been trying to pick up the slack and take care of the guinea pigs but he's not very good at it.

Thanks for the information about Muscatine, I noticed that there was nothing on petfinder for them. I will check it out.

I have a sister and brother and I was thinking of neutering him and sending them together but that will take a month or more and I need to find homes for them sooner rather than later. If you take her then I will probably either try to pair him with one of the males at the Muscatine shelter and rehome them together instead or go ahead and neuter him and pair him with a female. Be much cheaper for me if I can pair him with another male instead of neutering but I can't try it until I have more cage space. I've got wall to wall in my guinea pig room as well.

Hi - I wanted to post an update on my search. Thanks to aqh88 we are the new proud owners of a beautiful little girl piggie. She seems to be adjusting remarkably well (I didn't think it would be this easy to introduce a new family member) and the two girls get along great. Casey is so much more chatty, and she keeps going in search of her new sister and gives her kisses all over her face. It's very sweet and I know we did the right thing!! I have to get my 11 year old to take some pictures with her digital camera for me so I can post them!!
