Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I am wanting to get another boy, I have ample room, the cage is acctualy in my closet, but it is a big walk in closet and has nothing in it but the cage and care items. I have two guys already, ages 6 months and 18 months. Please let me know if you know of any, I'm located in Houston, TX and the farthest possible I can travel is Katy, I've looked on Petfinder.com and Pigloo.net and cavyrescue.com and craiglist and all the other sites that I've seen in this forum. I havn't seen any that look like a good match, and I would love to get one from Texas Rustlers GP Rescue, but it is too far. PM me if you would like to know more about living arrangements, or anything else. |

I am not familiar with TX geography, but I would contact Tx. Rustlers and other rescues anyway, they may know of pigs closer to you or be able to help with transport. Does your closet have good lighting and air circulation? Do they ever get any full spectrum lighting or sunlight? How big is your cage? Please, wait for a rescue. Call the local shelter and see if they can put you on a list, keep your eye on the local paper, contact pet supply stores, as they may know of someone who is looking for adopt out pigs, same goes with vets, they often meet people who are having accidental litters. Also, keep in mind that this is a pet you may have for the next 7 or more years of your life! What is a few hour road trip when there are litterally hundreds that are in hopeless situations just outside of your area! If you possibly can travel, even just to meet someone 1/2 way, please consider it! |

We've got several TX members on this forum. Perhaps we could set up a train; if you will contact Texas Rustlers, perhaps we could set it up. |

Ok, the cage is a 2 by 4 with a 2 by 2 loft, I will be adding on if I can find another to adopt. The closet door is never closed so the circulation is very good. The the lighting is very good and they are rarely in the cage, normally they are having floor time or cuddle time. I would be willing to go half way, but my parents are not, something about gas prices and no time, I wasn't really paying attention when they gave me the reasons Katy was the farthest we could go. I didn't think about contacting Texas Rustlers to find a shelter closer to me, but I did check the HSPCA and they didn't have any pigs up for adoption. I adopted the only one they had when I adopted my second boy, about 3 weeks ago. I know it's a short interval of time to be thinking about adopting again, but I am just in with the lil guys and want one more, but after that I won't have the room to house any more, it's a big closet, but it's not huge, plus fitting bedding, food, and other care items, it's got just enough room to add on for a third guy and still have enough room to walk around, otherwise I would adopt every single one I saw. I didn't even want to try to talk my folks into going farther than Katy because they said I would have to pay them back for the cost of gas to Katy and back, due to reasons I don't feel like explaining, and I'm not made of money and I can't afford it. (Summer job is over, school starts on August 16 and football practice has started, and I have to be there, I'm an athletic trainer) Also, can pigs be house with bunnies, because my friend has a dwarf bunny and cannot care for it, and either someone adopts it or it goes to the shelter, and if I can't find a gp close enough to me would I be able to put a bunny in with my piggers? I don't want it to go to the shelter because it's not a "no kill" shelter. |

Susan, that's an idea, but it depends on if I can talk the mamma and the papa into it. They'd probably think I was crazy, hehe, but it's worth a try, I'll have to let you know Monday, because I'm not going to be home untill then. |

Pigs and bunnies should never be housed together. Check out this link: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...ost-first.html And this one: Common Misconceptions about Guinea Pigs and their Care - Guinea Pig Cages Forum in order to get a better idea on care for your guinea pig. With all the things you mentioned, it kind of sounds like this might not be the best time to add more pigs. I know you love the ones you've got, and I"m sure you'll make a great owner; however it's very easy to get in over your head. Why not wait a little while until there are pigs available in a reasonable distance from you? In the meantime, you can concentrate on providing the best possible care to the boys you've already got. |

Yea, I probably should wait. My parents tried to remind me that I had a tendency to make spur of the moment desicions, and that I would probably over-whlem myself, etc. Maybe I should listen to them for once, but I probably will take that bunny, I'm not going to house it with my pigs, but I really can't bear the thought of that sweet lil girl going to a place that will kill her if she isn't adopted, I can use the girds and coro I was going to use to make the addition to build her a cage. Would I need to make the cage two grids tall? Know of any links on bunnys and their cages and care? |

There really is a lot to think about, by adding on, what amount of "adding" are we talking? With boys, you may find a 2x5 is not going to cut it for 3 boars. Some get along famously, but others don't in that size a cage, then what will you do? Rabbits and pigs should never ever be housed together. I can pull up other links on the subject too, but my dial up is acting up! They can carry diseases that can kill pigs, some argue they should not even be in the same room with eachother, and their back legs are very strong, they could hurt the pigs, not even meaning too! We had a member in the Canadian section basically slowly watch their pig dying because of a bunny injury! Just too sad. Also, I would think a bunny would need a much larger enclosure. I wonder, if you parents are not willing to drive to pick up a pig, are they going to be willing to help you if you need it with vet bills should they arise? How is your hay / food budget? These guys are expensive, it is probably a good idea to see how things are working out with the two, before adding a third. Sometimes, living under a parents roof is hard, but you gott respect the fact, they make the rules! I am sure if you want a third pig in a few months, that one will come up if you keep an eye on your local shelter / vet offices / petfinder classified listings. This is separate from the rescues, look at the top of the Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. page. You will see in tiny print "classifieds" these are private home listings! I am sure some pigs in your area may come up in them too! |

Is the rabbit neutered? If not, you'll have to neuter the rabbit. It's important for their health and makes them better pets i.e. not hormonal and litter-box trained. Please read over House Rabbit Society Rabbit Care Guide and pick up the House Rabbit Handbook. |

Yes, she is neutered, the first owner had her neutered. She's litter box trained already also. I will look into getting that book and thank you for the link! =D |
