After reading so many posting here about adopting, it is breaking my heart on how many lovely pigs are out there looking for someone to love and take care of them. I just wanted to post saying that we are interested in adopting/rescuing but there is no one besides the Humaine Society that has rescued pigs, and there they are limited. If you are looking to accuring a pet the only other place is from a pet store. We did get our second one from a store but I really believe it was a resuce situation. Dale was in a enclosure with lseveral large rabbit and she was a very small 2 month old. It was sad to see her trying to fend for herself and stay alive, as she was under weigh. We purchased her and took her to the vet as she was very sick from day one. After a lot of medical problems, and a sever infection that we were trying to fight, which took her life, we had to put her down after she was in our lives for a very short month and a half. In a situation like that I truly believe that we had rescued her and gave her a life that she would never have known in that store. She was very much loved and will be missed. If anyone hears of any pigs that need homes in Manitoba or even in northern Minnesota (as they can be brought into Canadain without any special papers) please do let me know. I have been searchig but there is nothing coming up besides Minniapolis and that is a days drive from here. Thank you in advance for all your help. |

Well, I found this listing on craigslist Winnipeg: Chewbacca the Guinea Pig Wants You! I would also suggest going into the Humane Society, tell them you are looking for pigs, and see if you can even get pre approved for adoption, by filling out the forms or doing the inhterview or whatever theiur criteria are. You can also let your vet know that you are looking for pigs, sometimes people try to drop them off there. Also local pet supply stores that don't sell pets sometimes get asked to take in pigs, you can give them your name and phone number or email to give to anyone trying to dump pigs. |

As for "rescuing" from petstores, I fully understand it breaks your heart to see a pig in so much trouble, but buying only condemns the cycle of neglect to continue. Your pig in the end new love, that is great, however, she died, and in its place, you better believe the store has not cleaned up and is perpetuating this cycle of abuse. If you see a cavy in need, in a store, that you believe is in danger and particularly if it is ill, call the Humane Society, they should be able to do something about it. It sounds like you have a big heart, I have an uncle in law in Winnipeg, unfortunately, I don't think he would be willing to help with a pig transport; wish you luck in finding a new furry companion! |

Petfinder classifieds also have a listing for two males, I think from the same person, sounds like a pair though, they where rescued from the humane society, so it sounds like you indeed do have a problem in Winnipeg... yes... looking into it, they are the same person, rescued two pigs, that are fighting, want to rehome separately or both if you have the space for two cages... I am wondering if space is an issue? Says cage is included, probably petshop? http://www.petfinder.com/post/post.cgi |

I have talked to the Humaine Society (actually today) and they only have one right now which is a girl. They have said that they do get some in form time to time but not on a regular basis. We have 2 boys, so that would not be a really good mix. We are willing to wait, and understand that that will probably happen. I know that there are some also the next province over, and that would be a 5 hour drive either way to just see them. |

They boys currently live in a store cage, but we are in the process of building them a 3x4 grid bottom with a 3x2 loft, in total it will be about 18 square feet. If we were to find another it cage will definately be ready by the time quarentine is done. |

c&K for some reason the link does not work. When I search pet finder I only get for the US and Saskatchewan, none for Manitoba. |

At the top of the page, is a heading for the "classifieds" section. It is small, but there. Click on it, then choose: ![]() (that actually may be a viable link) That will bring you to private listings, there Chewbacca and his friend he is querreling with Gandalf are listed. In the craigslisting Fairysari posted, it says that he wants them to go separately, as they are not getting along. I wonder though if it is just normal dominance that the lister is not letting play its natural course. If you where to contact them, I wonder if it would be best to suggest you want one, tell the person your cage plans, and that if needed, you could put a divider so that they can still "see" eachother if indeed, the pig does not get along with yours. It sounds like their is a 2 year old, and a 4 year old. I know how hard it can be to wait. When I first got my girl, my local shelter had no other girls, and I found the wait just so hard! Luckally, I only had to wait a few days, such is Southern Ontario! Still though, being that it is summer, and people love to dump their pets when vacations are being planned, I would not think you will need to wait too long! I think contacting vet offices, and seeing if the shelter can let you know when they get a boy in is a good idea. you could also try a posting for pets wanted on Petfinder, also in the classifieds. |

C&K you have been a lot of help. Thank you for the great suggestions. I would never have thought about talking to the vets. |

LoL! FairySari also suggested it a few posts up! However, it is good idea, because they do see a lot of pregnant mamma's, just be clear, you are not looking for a breeder, just an accidental litter. FairySari also mentioned pet supply stores, ones that don't sell pets, sometimes they can help put you in touch with people with unwanted / needing to rehome pigs too. I am sure that you will have pigs to choose from in no time! It is summer, summer just complicates the whole "dumping" picture, sad to say, just like leading up to major holidays, and a month or so after major holidays. |

I just can't believe that people would want to dump their pets. We love our 2 guys to death and I would never get rid of them. The least we can do is offer the ones that have no more home a good, clean place to live where they will be cared for and loved. They will also have (hopefully) 2 new friends to play with. |
