I was looking through our newspaper today and noticed someone "rehoming" (my wording...they may be simply "getting rid of," which, sadly, is probably the case) two guinea pigs. I was somewhat surprised because guinea pigs are not especially common in my little neck of the woods, and the animal shelter here just opened months ago and only has the dog wing opened (although I've heard they have small animals as well). Anyway, the ad reads: Guinea pigs (2), FREE, cage included. Very tame, good w/kids I won't post the phone number, but if someone in the area could save the pigs, I can send the number via pm. Thibodaux is about an hour from both Baton Rouge and New Orleans. |

Marlania - A have a home opening up for 2 GPs in about a month. Preferably 2 sows, the older the better. This is a friend of mine who is finally going to be getting back into her house. She is making a C&C cage, will be feeding Oxbow (we will be jointly ordering) and I am at her home often so will be there to house check them, trim nails, etc. She prefers older ones at this time as this is the first time she wil own GPs and prefers to not start with babies if in case she decides they aren't really her "thing" if her hay allergies act up too much. She is not the "dumper" type though. She had a hamster in the past which turned out to not be her "thing" but she kept the little guy in a great cage and treated him well until his death at a ripe old age. She just isn't going to get another hamster. So if you can call and find out more info, possibly go to see them and if they are same sex etc (after you speak to me about it) and pull them for me we may be able to quicky arrange transport to me where I will foster them until their new home is ready. If you take them make certain to take the cage too. If you leave the cage they may want to fill it with some other animal they decide to eventually dump. |

I needed it simply to get the pig home, I did not bring a carrier, because I thought the cage was comming with her. She was in it with a bunny, eventually she took the bunny out, it disapeard to another part of the house, and then handed me the cage. I did not want to go cageless because we had our hound in the car, who is enough of a pain in the butt! Anyway, now at home, I have the C&C, large rabbit cage in the attic, and small crappy cage from Stinky in my back room. What am I going to do with all these cages if this continues? I feel more like a cage collector then a guinea pig collector! I don't want to curb the small cages because some nitwit will take it and shove a guinea pig or rabbit in it! I know they well in this neighbourhood, never thinking twice about it. I think I will keep the rabbit cage, (good for quarantines and trips) and start distroying whatever small cages I get before I curb them. I had been thinking in the future I would not continue to collect the cages, but you make a very good arguement! Having to buy a new cage will definately make a dumping individual think twice about just how badly they want the responsibility again... |

You can donate the cage to the humane society or SPCA. Often they do not have the room for large C&C cages but are usually grateful to have the cages for small animals when they need them. Edit - I keep most of the small pet cages I collect. They come in handy at times when I rescue small animals, wildlife and we used some of them to transport the kittens in that we pulled from under a house a few weeks ago. |

I just called about the pigs. Turns out they were located less than 10 minutes from my house. The ad came out yesterday, and the pigs are already gone. That surprised me because, like I said before, people around here don't have pigs...most don't even know what guinea pigs look like. It's hard for me to imagine someone here responded to the ad that quickly so I'm thinking someone the original owners knew took the pigs before the ad came out. That or there's another Marlania out there who took them quickly. |

Well keep your eyes open for me. My friend is actually getting out of her FEMA trailer tonight and sending the first night back in her home since the storm (YAY SUZIE!). Soon she and her sons will be building the C&C cage and I will be placing an order for Oxbow food and hay. Then come the GPs. She doesn't care what they look like but does prefer sows. |

I'll definitely let you know if I run across anymore pigs. If need be, I have extra supplies to do a make-shift cage incase I ever pull pigs from a shelter (although I'm low on physical space because we're remodeling and have junk everywhere). FYI: if you take apart a large dog crate (like a Vari Kennel) and lie the top and bottom on the ground, it's the length of a 2x4 C&C cage. I learned that when we moved and needed a spot for my boys, as I already had an old C&C cage for the girls. It's not as wide, but it's definitely a good temporary setup. |
