UK People - Peter Gurney's pigs

Following the sad news of Peter's death, some of his pigs are up for adoption:

Thats my nearest rescue but it's still over 2hours away. If my parents would allow me to have more piggies I would have gladly helped out. Lets hope they all find great homes.

I wouldn't go that far. I have no doubt he loved GPs but many of his ideas were outdated and breeder standard oriented.

In the end yet another breeder's GPs have ended up in rescue.

Oh thats a shame that he's died. I don't know much about him really but I thought he rescued. I wasn't aware he was a breeder.

Not only was he a breeder, he was a mega breeder, and the breeding guru of all time!

I am shocked that the whole breeding community in the UK is not jumping at a chance of getting a piece of this legand, I would have thought that his pigs would be coveted prizes they would all cherish!

I am shocked (well, not really) that they have landed in rescue. Poor pigs. Yet again, in the end, showing why you should not breed. Afterall, if Peter Gurney's pigs can wind up homeless, that does that say for any other pig?

I'm pretty sure he rescued too. He has done a lot to improve the lives of guineas. It doesn't make it ok that he bred, but he did a lot of good too.

The mods can't remove groans, I was wondering what was so "offensive" about that post! You can take it off though by clicking on the option to remove it.

I think you can remove groans as I groaned at a useful post once and as I soon as I realised I had done it I managed to remove it straight away - phew!

Kind of an odd thing to say. He pigs being in rescue are nothing to do with him being a breeder. And just a point, almost all of his boars are nutered.
Would you be saying the same thing if someone was a pet owner or had their own small private rescue then passed away and their cavies had to go to rescue???

A little insenstive I think. but hey, maybe that is just me.

Re: UK People - Peter Gurney's pigs

Yes, anyone's pigs could end up in a rescue if circumstances aligned themselves correctly. Those pigs would not have ended up in a rescue if he hadn't died. We don't know what kind of arrangements he tried to make for them, or even if he had anyone willing to take his pigs. If I died my husband would take care of my pigs, but if I was single, I seriously doubt my parents or brother would take them on. They'd end up at the ARL or something.

And this post doesn't mean I condone breeding. While I appreciate that Peter Gurney cared for guinea pigs and tried to make their lives better the best way he knew how, I don't think he should have been breeding them.

Yes, I would. I expect pet owners to have as much of a plan for their animals when they pass as they would for their children.

I know where my animals are going if my husband and I were to die tomorrow. Do you? If you don't, then you need to start making arrangements.

Re: UK People - Peter Gurney's pigs

Yes I do have plans for my animals, although I don't plan on goign anywhere just yet.
All I meant was that I felt what you wrote was a little insensative. What if one of Peters family was to be brouwsing the web and found this post.

To read that he was viewed as "yet another breeder" and that his cavies have ended up in rescue, makes him sound like a bad person. You may not have aggreed with his ideas and views or they way he kept his cavies, but please respect him as a person. And undrstand that what you say can (if read) affect those who were close to him.

Insensitive how? I stated my my opinion. If his family really cared about what he would want after his death I doubt that his animals would have ended up in rescue. I'm sure Mr. Gurney did not want any of his animals to end up in rescue but he either did not make plans for his animals or he chose poor caretakers to take his animals when he died.

I believe I stated that I'm sure he loved his GP and never said anything about him being a bad person. I simply feel that he could have done better.

Why should I respect him? I'm not saying I don't but I can't say I do either. I'm certain he did what he thought was best for GPs but my ideas of what is best is quite different then his. Because we would see things so differently, and because I never met him to know for certain he deserves my respect, I can't say how I feel wither way.

As far as his family, they should have taken care of these animals upon his death.

In the end I have seen FAR too many respected, prominent and (so called)responsible breeders die in the last few years and leave behind scores of animals for the rescues to take care of. THEN other breeders get upset because the rescues have the nerve to point out the problem. This is just another example of a breeder and his pigs ending up in rescue. It's sad that they are from a man who so loved his animals and tried to do what is right. Unfortunately, in death, he did not set a very good example.
