Re: Looking to adopt in Louisiana I was about to help you out but I see that you raise and show rabbits and said you are soon to be adding GPs. Are you planning to breed from your adopted/rescued GPs? I should let you know that this forum is pro rescue and anti breeding/showing. There is too much of an animal overpopulation for breeding to be acceptable and too many anmals looking for homes to be adding to the population.

Re: Looking to adopt in Louisiana We do breed and show rabbits. We make sure that all rabbits go to good home just like rescue people do. None of our rabbits are ever sold to pet stores or feed stores. If we can not find a home when it is time for a rabbit to leave then we keep them. I have nothing against rescue but just because we show rabbits does not make us bad people.. I do understand that people breed and breed and then let loose animals or sell them to who ever comes first with the cash, but we are not like that. No one in louisiana shows guinea pigs right now. There are 4-5 people who are getting guinea pigs to start showing. We where looking to adopt pets right now and where thinking about showing them, but had not decided yet. Sorry if I offended anyone. I see nothing wrong with showing any animal if you are a responsible person. It is a hobby that teaches my children responsiblity to take care of their animals and they are not out causing trouble or doing drugs like other kids. I will not post again if I offended anyone. ashley

I do know that people with true empathy and love for animals do not haul rabbits and GPs to shows or breed them. GPs and rabbits do not enjoy being shown and it serves no purpose other then to stroke the breeder's ego. Breeding your animals endangers their health and lives and leaves other animals without homes because for every animal you sell there is a shelter animal dying. Quote:
There are enough homeless GPs here already. I can always find GPs looking for homes when people ask for them. I can guarentee you that if you and others start breeding and showing you will create a need for GP rescues to open here because there will be a marked increase in homeless GPs. Much like there is a need for the rabbit rescues that exist here in La. Quote:

I teach my kids morals by being empathetic animal caregivers that understand the dangers and wrongs of breeding their animals. I teach them responsibility by bringing them with me when I volunteer at the SPCA or other rescues. In short I am teaching them that all living things deserve our respect and that everything they do has an impact on the world. They can make that impact a positive one (by not adding to the animal overpopulation problem and act with empathy) or a negative one (to ignore the animal overpopulation problem and act selfishly). |

Re: Looking to adopt in Louisiana Ashley, you have not offended anyone. But here at cavy cages we are pro adoption, and anti-breeding and showing. We are only trying to help with our constructive criticism

Re: Looking to adopt in Louisiana She offended me. She should go to an animal shelter and see all the rabbits being euthanized. I'd like to know if she is neutering/spaying all rabbits that she sells to ensure they are not out there reproducing, and is microchipping them in case they end up in an animal shelter. That's nice that you want to show your kids the cycle of life but why not foster for an animal rescue or take them to an animal shelter to see the end result of backyard breeders.

Re: Looking to adopt in Louisiana Are you aware that every home you place a rabbit into, could have adopted a homeless rabbit instead? Contact your local animal shelters and see how many rabbits are euthanized each year. Contact your local House Rabbit Society and learn about the magnitude of the rabbit over population problem. Look at it this way- If there are 25 breeders in your show circuit, who each produce 12 rabbits a year- that's 300 rabbits needing homes. If these same people put their efforts into finding homes for homeless bunnies- there would be 300 less bunnies in shelters and rescues. Instead, you are filling these homes with rabbits that truly did NOT need to be bred and are contributing to the over population problem. That is why this board comes down hard on breeders, of any kind. As for Guinea pigs- are you aware that one in five pregnancies - 20%- will result in the death of the sow ? If you had a medical condition which gave you a 20% chance of dying in childbirth, how would you feel about people who encouraged you to ignore this fact and to try to have children? You can make a difference. You can help be part of the solution. Contact the House Rabbit Society. Encourage others in your show circuit to do the same. Stop contributing to the over population problem. Show that you really do care about these animals! http://rabbit.org/adoption/overpopulation.html
