2 Babies That Were From A Store Pig

My pig was pregnant when I got her and now I have 2 babies. When can I give these pigs away. At 6 weeks or can they be younger.

A mod will have to move it. You need to seperate any boy pigs by 3 weeks or they can impregnate mom or sisters.

You could post in the adoption area as well.

Well, I would wait till someone more knowledgeable answers, but I would say if they're already separated at three weeks, they are probably good to go.

As soon as they are seperated from Mom. Please make sure they go to a good home.

Yes I have told people that they are available to a good home but then I tell them everything. I mean everything all the good and the bad. I have not got someone who really wants them yet but I m not worried.

After you adopt out the babies, will mom be all alone? I hope not. She needs a friend.

No responsible Piggy mom would do this. 3 weeks is not old enough to go to a new home, unless that piggy home is very knowledgable about guinea pigs. The three week rule is a catch 22 in some ways, on one hand, the males could get mamma pregnant, so they have to be removed, but often they are still nursing at this age and dependent on mamma, at least a little.

You need to separate, but want to keep a close eye on how the boy(s) are doing. Weigh daily, keep a close eye on him (them) Be ready to do a bit of handfeeding, or bring to a vet if it goes really down hill. Most often, everything is fine, problems are the exception, not the norm. But still, anyone who remembers their first few weeks of having a piggy will know that the transition to becomming a good piggy mamma can be a little rough. You want to make sure the baby piggy is hardy enough to withstand any "bumps".

I would wait to 4 or 5 weeks to rehome as long as all is looking good.

Re: 2 Babies That Were From A Store Pig

If mom doesn't have any other cagemate, keep the baby girl.

Try to adopt the boy out to someone who will house him with another boar or a spayed sow. It will help socialize him if he goes into a home with a grownup pig. If you can't find anyone, you can house the boy by his mom and sister (make sure he can't get through the grids!) until he's old enough to be neutered (4-6 months).

I disagree with that statement. You can rehome pigs upon separation. Normal babies are quite healthy and if they are not, it's pretty obvious. The much more important issue is to do everything possible to move a lone baby male in with another male if at possible. What I wouldn't do is adopt him out by himself.

Re: 2 Babies That Were From A Store Pig

I really appreciate all the information. I think I am going to keep the girl with the mom and the boy will be separated on Sunday cause I really don't want another pregnant mom. I will adopt out the boy when I find a real good home. Both babies are just fine they are 9 and 10 oz already and they were only 4 and 5 oz when born. Yes they have unlimited hay and pellets which I can not believe how much they eat. I am giving them veggies as well but I didn't realize that you should only give one carrot a day and I have been giving like 3 or 4 a day. I'll have to go pick up some different things tomorrow. The babies are so cute and the mom is like my baby. I'll try
to download pic tonight.

Re: 2 Babies That Were From A Store Pig

I am very happy right now. I have been real worried that the babies would not wean and not drink water. Well last night I noticed 1 of the babies playing with the water bottle, well today when I got home they have both drank out of the water bottle a few times.

They sound cute! Hope that you were able to work out a good home situation for the little guy!!! I bet the Mum is loving the company of her daughter.
