Oh dear, Because I was wondering if it was possible to find any long haired cavies anywhere near Florida, I went searching. Now my heart has been stolen by a couple boys in northern Alabama. They are listed with Kat's Kritters GP Rescue in Tennessee, but are being housed in NW Alabama. Dooley, Chase, and Chance, look like they all came from the same litter. They are long-haired orange and white cuties and I am in love. Can't see their faces under their mops of hair and I think it is the most adorable thing in the world. See, this is why I can't look at all the orphaned piggies out there, I would move all the furniture out of my home and set up CC cages till you couldn't walk |

I'd be happy to take a short trip on the piggie train Seriously though, I am about two hours away from Tallahassee and three hours from Montgomery, Alabama. If you would be willing to meet in Quincy, or especially if you would actually drive to Defuniak Springs where I work, I'd be happy to head up somewhere in Alabama for you. Sarah |

Oh you all are too nice. What am I to do. Oh goodness, I will ask for advice from all of you with six? Is it that much of a difference with six than with four? I am a sucker for animals in need and I have room. I guess it always just boils down to time and money. I think I need a chart on the best ways to save money cavy style I will be thinking it over today and let you know skirbo. You are such a doll! |

I went from having 2 to having 11 in a matter of a few months. Cost wise, it's really not that much more expensive... you buy more veggies, but the most I think we've spent on veggies is $15 a week. And that was extravagant because the farmers market wasn't open. We bed on fleece (which would totally be cheaper if I would STOP BUYING IT EVERY TIME I GO IN WALMART!!!) with litter pans, the litter is fairley cheap (You can KD pine or aspen in a HUUUGE bag at Walmart near here for between $5-10). They need cage changes more frequently, and they require a bit of attention, but other than that... as long as they are all healthy (the vet bills would be ginormus if all mine got sick at once!!!) the cost isn't that bad. |

I just went from five to eight. I think my hay bill increase but not much. The veggie bill doesn't seem too high but the new girls have been shy during meal times. I have to make sure all eight are up in the kitchen and eating. I use fleece as well. I have four potty areas with Aspen and Carefresh in them. I have to clean the one under the hay every other day but the rest get cleaned out once a week when I do a complete change and cleaning. I would like to suggest that when you get them (teehee) that you get a book to organize yourself. I have a binder with a grooming chart for each of them. This way I can keep track of when I trim nails, do butt baths/trim (for the longer haired girls), when I've cleaned their ears out and a weight chart. I also have a medication section if I have to give them meds. I have also added a bio of each girl and I have pictures of them as well. I hope this helps. It's really not a big jump from 4 to 6. If you have the room and can afford it, go for it. Let us know what you decide. |

Well just to update, I have e-mailed the lady in charge of the Tennessee rescue, Kat is her name I think. I will be waiting for her reply. I am one hundred percent sure I am going to try to adopt them. Still working on how everything and everybody is going to fit . I do have space, I swear. Just have to move some furniture I think. Haha, next year, I will definitely need a new apartment. Right now the boys relax between their "penthouse" my apartment near campus, and their "vacation beachouse" my parents house. Now there will be three CC cages (hopefully) to cart around. I sure do love these guys!People might think since I'm a college student, I don't have much time. What some people don't know is I don't have time consumers like boyfriends, jobs, etc. Kind of sad actually. Haha. I'm on scholarship, I don't have need for a man, and the job I do have is only during the summer. So these guys are my life. Tell me there are some of ya'll out there like that. Pleeez. I mean, I'm the girl who told my mother I would rather have a car accident than run over a possum or armadillo. My priority list used to be #1 animals, #2 the world. Anyways, I could go on about my love and dedication to helping animals. But being an english major, almost graduated, it would be a ten page dissertation. And I probably spelled that wrong. Hah! Anyway, there is the plan right now. Seriously, I do have room, I do have money, I do have time. I've just never done this before. So I probably will be asking a lot of questions along the way. And probably asking the same questions twice. Like the best ways to save money! There you go, update complete. Goodnight ya'll |

By the way JennG, that was a fantastic suggestion about the binder for my boys. I keep writing down things on different pieces of paper, like give Ivermectin when and need greens. A binder would probably help |

I have mine broken down like this: (I have tabs for) a cavy guide that I put together with the help of many resources; and then a tab for each piggie. I have their bio (where they came from, what the date was and approximately how old they were when adopted as well as any special stuff (ie: Mama gave birth shortly after adopting her, Angel was born blind, etc...). I'm going to add their picture to the bio but haven't done that yet. I like to scrapbook and I know what I want to use but need to go get them. Then I have a checklist for each of them. I can try and get a copy of the checklist if you'd like. Good luck. I'm so excited for you. When I got my last three girls, I added two silkies and a abbruvian sow to 2 abbys, 2 american smooth coats and a ridgeback/abby mix. |

Ly... (or anyone) Is Oscar a Peruvians (long hair)? And what is Fizbit? Little Larry (white) is in the picture as well. RIP. (I certainly miss my little white furry guy.) I trim Oscar's hair, so he can see clearly. I know that question has to sound strange since I have had piggies for so many years... It's just that I never really cared about their breed, or whatever that label is. I just adopt whoever needs adopting. I suppose it's time I learn. Faerysprite, Those little guys are so precious. Like you, I think I could easily move out my furniture and put in wall to wall C & C cages... I might even join Jenn's train. |

Yes, Oscar look to be a Peruvian. It's hard to tell what Fizbit is because I can't see his whole body. If little Larry was totally white he would be an American PEW. |

So Oscar is a little Peruvian. Huh Hey...... Faerysprite, looks like I have a Peruvian, and didn't even know it. And yes.... little Larry was totally white, and I do recall hearing the vet. tell her assistant that he was an "American". A regular Red, White and Blue kinda guy. : ) Here is a picture of Fizbit. He's sleeping. One thing that he does well, aside from trying to attack "the hand".. Lovingly known as our Demon Pig... What breed do you think Fizbit might be? |

Faerysprite like JennG I too just adopted 4 ladies and that made my herd go to 6. Right now I see hay as the biggest money matter. I can get all the free hay I want from my daughter's riding stable but my original girl, Polly and my chinchilla refused her hay and my daughter is very fussy about the hay she feeds her Arabians. I am going to try again and this time mix store bought with barn hay and see if I can't get them switched. If you look at my gallery you will see that I have made part of my cage fleece and the kitchen is the shavings area. It is so easy. When the entire thing was shavings I knew I would not be able to take care of it once I got back into class and clinicals next week. Now it is a dream. I get my shavings at a feedstore for tons less than a regular store. |
