Wow... that's a lot of guinea pigs. Do you know how they ended up there? I would love to take in one more, as that is all I have room for at the moment, however, I have no way of getting down there. |

The other dad is there now and has picked out a boar & sow pair of piggies to bring home. One is blind in one eye, but otherwise they are in good shape. The boar is neutered. From what I understand, the remaining piggies are all boars right now which I found curious. Anyway, the vet is checking the pair out now and if they get the ok to go home with us, a volunteer will be visiting our home to make sure the cage is adequate and that we don't have anything else around the house waiting to eat them. Only then will they be left in our care. I think that really says something about their level of care. This seems like such a good place to adopt. |

That does sound like a great place to adopt. You're probably right about the other shelters... not too many in my area will take in a lot of the animals that I saw on the website (guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, turtles, etc.) I am happy to hear that they care about the animals so much and that your plans for adopting seem to be going good so far. |

This is the other dad. Just got home with our new pair. The shelter is definitely a good one. They have taken very good care of these animals. The two I adopted were born at the shelter and have lived there all their lives. They are in quarintine right now. The ladies that came to check us out drove almost an hour away from the shelter to check us out. The lady who runs the adoption portion of this rescue is named Rita and her number is on the site above. As for the new additions they are eating and running in their new found home and seem very happy. Zoe and Chloe are very curious and hanging out at the edge of the cage watching them. I definitely approve of this rescue. Among the other animals are rabbits and birds and reptiles. |

They would probably make an appointment with you to come up. since you are so far it would probably do an all day thing. All I can say is call them. see what Rita says. |

I have looked at their site before when I was looking for a buddy for Piglet. It kills me that there seem to be so many piggies needing homes and I am at my limit of four. But yeah to you for adopting! |

I like Dusty and Archie! Archie: http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?act...=25&tmpl=&stat= And Dusty: http://www.petfinder.org/pet.cgi?act...=25&tmpl=&stat= I would really like to adopt Dusty! But the problem is that I have two sow's and I don't think that Dusty is neutered |

Sally and Spike, neutered brother and sister. Yes they will neuter, just takes a bit longer for the adoption to go through. The vet on the premises wont allow them to leave without a clean bill of health. Pics are on my posts from yesterday on the cavy cgat forum. |

I was wondering..... Do you think when they would come up to check out my house, if they could bring Dusty with them? It is a 3 hour 45 minite drive down to Ft.Lauderdale, so do you think they would bring him? Also, if I would neuter Dusty, how much longer would the adoption take? And is having three pigs a big step from two? Sorry for all the questions! Bina |

Just talked to the shelter, they had a few questions of their own, and as long as you can come, furnish pictures of the cage, and a list of other pets in the household they may forego the home visit. They want to make sure the animals are in a good home and not in danger. As for the neutering thing it would take a week once you have been ok'ed through the adoption process to get the piggie home. I think you would have to go get them though. As for the difference between 2 piggies and 3 piggies I went from 2 to 4 and the only difference I have seen is more veggies and poop. :-) Waiting for Rita to call me back and let me know everything you need exactly so I can relay that to you or you can call 954 524 4302 extention 15 Rita or Sarah will be able to help. |

Most rescues are willing to forward information regarding their requirements to other similar organizations in your area. If you are serious about adopting from a group, a home check can usually be arranged somehow. Sarah |

Right now we are collaborating with them on requirements for adoptive parents since they've never had anything written down. They've just been using their own common sense. We're going to recommend cage sizes, diets, cavy savvy education, and that they have a relationship with a local cavy savvy vet. We're very much open to suggestions in this department. Unfortunately, due to our schedules, we won't be able to both go in to meet with them for a couple of weeks, so we have some time to iron our recommendations out. But, with any luck, we should be able to get this underway in a month or so and start getting some of their piggies into loving homes. Also, if anyone in Florida would be willing to volunteer to interview potential adopters and inspect their homes and cavy accomodations, we'd love to hear from you. |
