Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I currently have one boar. He had other homes before me so I'm not sure of his age but I'm guessing 2-3 years. Before I found this website he was in a pet store cage and I thought he was fine alone. Well now hes in a 4x3 C&C cage and loves it. And after reading more on this website i realize he needs another gp, i know he would be so much happier. I want to get a boar for obvious reasons. So after being an owner of one gp for a while i have a couple questions. Should I get him a young gp or an older one? Are there any gp rescues around virginia beach or the eastern shore of va? How should I go about introducing them? thanks |

A younger boar does well with and older boar. Check www.petfinder.com for rescues near your area. |

Also www.cavyrescue.com www.petharbor.com and the sites listed here: http://www.guinealynx.info/rescues.html A younger one would be best, but also a mellow adult boar may work too. A rescue will help you match them up. |

I have to say that I have two boars that I have had since they were pretty young. Wiggy is so docile to hold, but put him near another pig and look out - he does the hip sway and chatters. I thought it was all show, but nope. When I introduced him to another young boar his own age, possibly a bit younger, it didn't take long for teeth chattering and then actually attacked. I had tried putting them with a barrier between them where they could have contact but not able to bite, then re-introduced. That time, my 2nd, Oreo, ended up with quite a gash on his head, so that was the end of introductions. They say that sometimes, just having contact between a divider is company enough, and I'd have to agree. As long as there is a separation between cube panels, they're fine. I'll never attempt a re-introduction again. Not to be negative, but I had never expected my docile little Wiggy to be such a beast towards his 'friend'. At least C&C are easy to divide up. Good luck. I hope it works out, because my two girls are adorable together with cuddling and one taking care of the other. I certainly hope that this is your experience as well. Lori |

I'm sure you will. I guess I just wanted to say that there's always the chance that despite your best of planning and intentions, sometimes individual personalities clash. Wiggy is also my only pet shop pig, and the reason that I even bought him is that I took my daughters there to see if they would be ok with one (I had a submitted an application to adopt a rescue pig), and he was so docile with them. When we returned him to his cage at the pet shop, the bigger olders pigs he was in with started biting him and he was screaming, so we 'saved' him. Now that I think about it, probably the trauma that he was put through there contributed to his mistrust of other pigs, but I would have thought that after getting beat up by dominant pigs, that he wouldn't have become one shortly thereafter. I'm certain that you'll have much better luck than me and my traumatized pig. : ) Lori |
