I would like to make my own hammock! I really need to know what type of material is best for doing this? Does it need to be stuffed with in other kind of material or what? Please help? Any ideas will help a lot! Thanks.

Re: hammock

I made hammocks from small towels.I sewed shoe laces to each corner to tie the hammock to the sides of my cage, It`s quite low to the ground so easy for them to go in and out of. And I can just wash it as normal in the machine.

hammock

Just read on Cavies galore board that someone used an old denim jean pantleg with a couple dowels to hang the hammock in the cage. Don't know how this works, but I may try it when I get a junk pair of jeans.

This is how I made my hammok. I took some fleece and cut it into a square (make sure it is a square and not a rectangle or else this won't work) folded it into a triange and attached it to the sides by cutting small holes in it by the edges (adjust to the height you want it to be) and attached with cable ties. Mu loves it.

There are many great ideas for making guinea pig beds, hammocks, etc at guinea pig fun http://cavyfun.com/ I have made many things with the ideas shown on this site. Look under the crafts section.

I used an old sweatshirt that I cut up. I followed the instructions from one of the threads here (not sure where) and used safety pins to attach it to the cage (careful to keep pins where pigs can't get to them). However, I love the idea of attaching shoelaces. I think I'll modify my hammock. As for hammocks vs cozies - I like the idea that they are off the ground. My pigs tend to trample their cozy and soil it quickly. However, they've yet to voluntarily get into the hammock so it may not work in the end. They like to huddle under it though.

Ha, Piglet took my link. I just used a piece of fleece I had lying around. Good luck on the hammock!

on another forum, i read about a girl whose pig fell out of ehr hammock and broke a foot, resulting in a very large vet bill. Is there a high risk of this happening?

Re: Need help on hammock

I know a friend of mine who makes hammocks for rats, and they are very good quality and durable. I don't know if she is still making them, since she is going through things, but this is her website: http://www.freewebs.com/perfect_pets_rat_rescue/

I don't believe there is much risk of this happening if you only put it 1/2 a grid up. That's just 7 inches, but it *could* hurt if the cavy fell just the right way. How high up was this pig's hammock?

Re: Need help on hammock

You can always make rails for your ramps, and if you think about it your guinea pig could harm itself in any cage setup if it really wanted to. I'm going to make mine out of fleece.

What a great idea! Ruth loves lying under things, so she can lie on the hammock or under the hammock! Thanks!
