Is this hidey safe for pigs?

My pigs tend to chew on their hideys. Could you tell me if this one is safe? Does it have some sort of a finish? Is the wood safe?

Re: Is this hidey safe for pigs?

I have that but a little bit bigger for my pigs. They don't really chew on it at all, but I'm almost certain their isn't any type of finish on it.

Theres no finish. I have the bigger version of that... I don't really like it though. It gets all nasty really quick.

What do you mean nasty? More so than a plastic one? Why?

Wood will absorbe urine and then it's.. ugh. Where as plastic can be easily cleaned off.

As for chewing, do your pigs have other things to chew on? From what I've observed chewing is sometimes because of either boredom or lack of hay (Though some pigs just like to chew).

I find stuffing a toilet paper roll (that's been slit up the side) with hay can be a good chewing alternative to try and redirect their chewing to, my boys fight over theirs so I have to give them two now, they're like their own personal tiny hay racks.

Didn't you read the "Overview" for the product?
From the link you provided:
"Solidly constructed of all-natural, nontoxic quality timber and perfectly sized for every small pet variety. ..... The 3/8" thick wood walls allow for healthy chewing to satisfy your pet's need to gnaw."

And in "More Information"
"Cleaning your Woodland Get-A-Way
If needed, simply wipe any waste products from the den sides with a warm, wet cloth. Thoroughly air dry before returning the Woodland Get-A-Way to your pet's environment."

So, Yes it is safe for your guinea pigs and if you keep it clean it should last for a long time.

What he said ^^ My piggies absolutely love the hay in a tube. They push it around, chew on it, and have fun with it.

Re: Is this hidey safe for pigs?

Ash, I did read the description, but what concerned me is that it didn't say anything about a finish. Also, I know a lot of things that are marketed to piggies are not actually safe for them, which is why I wanted to check.

Re: Is this hidey safe for pigs?

I do provide my piggies with unlimited hay, but the paper roll sounds like a fun toy for them

Re: Is this hidey safe for pigs?

That one is fine. I've used it before. If you get one get the extra large one as sometimes larger piggies will stuff themselves in the little one. Also wipe it down with the same 1:1 vinegar mix you use to clean the cage

I tend to like hand sewn huts and plastic ones better though. Especially the sewn ones that I can put in the washer.

Piggies tend to jump on top of the wooden ones and then have a hard time getting down. Or slip off on the way up.

Thanks JD. Thats exactly what I meant. It just gets stinky and gross. I do soak mine in a vinegar and water solution and allow it to fully dry out, but the whole thought of it just grosses me out.
