Lightbulb Ashtray as a Food Dish

Hi I thought it best to put this thread up here. I was talking to one of the members on another thread about a dish that won't topple when your piggy is enjoying a snack/meal. The best I could find was an ashtray! I know it sounds disgusting but not if you buy a brand new one. What is great is they come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors and for some reason they are much heavier than a normal dish of the same size. I bought Gizzy some black ones and painted them to match her play time towels and her house fleeces.

What is nice is the ones I got hold exactly 1/2 cup cut up green beans

I found these at a Mr Price Home - similar to a Target store for R19.99 (aprox $2.85)

Happy Piggy Time all!

What a great idea! I find the ceramic bowls at my local pet shop so boring. Thanks for the tip GizzyandMe.

Awwww, that is so cute! Thanks for the pics of those, I'm going to get my boys some! He don't bite or chew on it at all does he? Mine sometimes do, bite on the edges a little bit, so I would wanna make sure they would be able to get that paint off and ingest it.

Hi Angiekay

As for:

, I got a paint from the craft store that you paint and then bake in your oven and the gentleman informed me that it won't chip and is basically toxic free (bit more expensive but worth it). Gizzy used to chew on her plastic bowls but she has not done so with these bowls at all.

I have some older ceramic and also glass ash trays that I use in the cages. I find that they don't tip over and work well. The only thing is Sebastian will lay down while he eats and just chomp away at his pellets.

Re: Ashtray as a Food Dish

The dish is cute however, 1/2 cup of green beans is way too much for one feeding. You only want to feed 1-2 green beans per pig about 3 times a week. They are high in oxalic acid.

Re: Ashtray as a Food Dish

Dont mean to change the subject it is a great idea, but Peggysue your guinea pig lays and eats his pellets? All 6 of my boys do that and I thought they were just unusually lazy! LOL thanks for making me fell like a normal piggy parent!

Oh my me tooo, my older pig Fred will just lay down at the bowl, like he's so fat and lazy he can't even stand up to eat. It's so cute though, glad to know I'm not alone, as we all never hardly are here.

I got a ceramic bowl from Value Village for 50 cents! Not as cool as yours though, GizzyandMe.

Re: Ashtray as a Food Dish

Oh wow that's a great idea! I've been having trouble finding a dish which is a good size and heavy enough, most of the petstore ones are too small or else they are too big. Thanks heaps for the idea

Re: Ashtray as a Food Dish

When I saw the title of this post I thought for sure that the post would say dont do it. It does make sense but I would definately think they would have to be brand new. I don't think you could ever wash the toxins out completly. Thanks for the tip
