Home-made hideys

My grandpa will probably make my Guinea Pigs their own hideys but I'm worried that they might find screws or something?

It would be something wooden like this : Super Pet Chinchilla Hut - Cage Accessories - Small Pet - PetSmart But nothing like that.

Re: Home-made hideys

Chances are that they won't. GP's don't chew like most of the other rodents we keep as pets. As long as your grandpa doesn't put a screw in crooked, you should be fine.

Re: Home-made hideys

I definately don't reccommend wooden hidey houses. I had the one provided in the link and it got stained, it stunk, started to rot, etc.
Better off with a pigloo or something else.

Re: Home-made hideys

The best hideys (I think) are cardboard boxes. When I go to Sam's club (a warehouse grocery store) they put out free extra boxes to carry your stuff in and so they don't have to throw them out, I always pick up a bunch. The piggies love them, and they are free!

Most of the boxes there have "doors" cut into them already (to show the product I'm guessing, for display) but if not, then it's really easy to cut one in. Also, if they get chewed too much or soiled, throw them away and put in a new one. Easy!

Re: Home-made hideys

O' my gosh I love using old ice cream and other large tubs (even a colandar) as a hidey. You just need to cut a large enough hole and plop it in. By the way a saw called a japanese saw (long flat thin double sided wood saw with long handle) or an actual log wood saw works great for cutting holes in hard plastic. I also hate wood houses they are just too unsanitary.

Re: Home-made hideys

Wood houses do kinda suck, but my eldest boy LOVES his log arch. I'm thinking of getting a couple more because they are so loved! The pet store where I get my food sells the colorful ones, and the ones where I get the "Oh Crap, we need this NOW" stuff sells the wooden ones.
