I have adopted more pigs, so I am in need of more hidey's! I have been using cardboard boxes with several holes cut in them, but I'd like something a little bit more permanant. I was thinking of getting a few plastic dishpans/buckets from the local Dollar General (I love any excuse to go to the dollar stores! ) and cutting a few doorways into each. The dishpans are roomy (a tad smaller than one compartment of the average two compartment kitchen sink) washable and cheap! I think they might cost two dollars each. What do you think? Will it work and be safe? |

Yup that works well. I use stackable bins from the dollar store. so I didnt have to cut an opening. they already had one. After you cut the holes, make sure to use standpaper to get rid of any sharp edges/stray plastic. |

I'm sure your guinea pigs would love it. They don't care what it looks like as long as it's cozy! |

It sounds great! I've also seen people use little plastic footstools. That way you don't have to cut any holes. Towel tents are another cheap and easy option. |

The little footstools are where I got the idea. I just thought my pigs would prefer something a little more closed in. I want to try the towel tents in my loft one of these days The dishpanloos are a complete success! They were a little difficult to cut, but it was worth it! Deborah (the newly adopted girl) especially loves it. I don't think she had a hidey in her previous home ![]() They were a little pricier than I thought...a whole $2.75....pocketbook buster haha. But well worth it. I may go back and get a few more! |

At many retailers there are these storage bins that have holes along the sides and ends. They are sterilite brand. Here is a picture of what they are: Sterilite - Storage I use the small size for the ratties and the larger sizes for the pigs. They don't cost that much and are made of hard plastic and are very durable. I've been using mine for 2-3 years now. I have a couple I've cut one doorway in and a couple that have doors on both ends to serve both as a hidey and a tunnel. The girls prefer the ones open on both ends. I like them because they provide great ventilation when it's warmer in the house. The doors were cut out using a dremel and then the edges were sanded down. Here is a pic of one I modified into a piggie hidey. |
