My husband wants to make my three pigs a little red barn house for their cage. Does anyone know of any paint, stain or any other method to color the wood red that is pig safe? Is aspen the best wood to use or could we use something else? Thanks. |

I think you could use non-toxic paint but I'm not sure. I would just make it out of red coroplast. |

Coroplast is a good idea if you have it available. |

Without painting you could look for cherry, red oak or mahogany wood. I would personally do that instead of staining or painting. But, if all else fails and you do decide to paint the wood, I would look at the can and see if it says it's safe for babies and animals, it should say something to that extent on it. Look at the ingredients also and avoid lead, zinc and chromate. If you are getting it at a hardware store, ask them if it safe if animals chew on it to be 100% sure. And if that fails, there is a lovely store in Springfield, Ohio called Maine's Signs And Designs that sells all colors of coroplast for cheap. In fact, I just got a 33'' by 77'' sheet for $15 exactly from them today. They might charge a dollar or so more for color, but I am not sure. (they are also very sweet people!) Oh, I forgot to mention, if you could use vegetable dye to color it, that would be good and safe. : ) |
