Handmade Wooden Toys

I got a great book (at least I thought it was good) called "Guinea Pigs, A Complete Pet Owners Manual" by Immanuel Birmelin.

It has a cool section called "Activity Keeps Them Fit" which inspired me. It shows different little things you can make to keep your pig engaged. Some of the items are wood, but he doesn't give any specifics on type.

So if I were to go to like Home Depot or Lowes to get some wood to build with, what type would I get? I am guessing untreated kiln dried pine? Or is pine dangerous? I can't remember. Ugh! So much to remember about these guys!

Also, my hubby said if I treated it with a sealant (even a non-toxic one) to keep the urine from soaking in and the piggie chewed on it, it would be bad.
So I was thinking and thinking and all I could think of is putting some kind of barrier at the bottom. You know those report covers that you slide the binding bar on the left hand side to keep it all together? At the plastics store in Manhattan, they had something that looks like that, but it was bigger. So I could slide it on the bottom so the pee wouldn't seep in, maybe? I know I have crazy ideas all the time so let me know if this sounds good or bad. I have become so cavy obsessed that sometimes I don't even know if I live in reality anymore.

I know Guinea pigs don't require these sorts of toys, but it would keep me busy and hopefully give me things I can put in the cage now and then to add some variety or maybe for floor time activities.
