Water Bottle

I had to toss my guinea pigs water bottle because when I got her last Saturday from a family I noticed that the water bottle had algae in it or whatever it was growing inside of it so I immediately tossed it. Now I am having a hard time finding one that doesn't leak! What brand or type of water bottle does everyone use and where can I get it? I have a petsmart near me, walmart, target, etc I can also order it online if needed.

Thanks!

Re: Water Bottle

I think if you want ones that don't leak, the best are the spring-action ones. They do cost over $10 though.

I love to be able to change my water bottles... so I use mine from walmart. I have 2 water bottles & 2 dishes of water to catch the leak plus it gives my piggies choices.

Spring action? Where do you find those?

Unfortunately, I remembered finding them at Petco (and I do try not to shop there).

I try to do a search for you online at Petco, but the one that my local Petco carries did not appear online. This is the closest that I came across...

SAM Water Works Ball-Tip Bottle with SAM Housing Adapter at PETCO

but the one I remembered seeing did say "spring action"... I think they add a spring to the ball bearing tube part or something. I will check again at my local Petco & let you know of the brand.

Re: Water Bottle

Yeah I like to change mine too. I usually buy new ones at least once a year and toss the old ones just for sanitation purposes. I do clean them out as well throughout the year with soap, hot water, and a bottle brush.

I had one bottle before that I had bought for my ferrets that had a valve instead of a ball, they had to push the valve with their nose and then water would come out. I liked it but after a bit it to started leaking, it did work for about 8 months though.

Thanks for the links, I will check out those bottles. I may try one of the spring action ones and see how it works.

Re: Water Bottle

This is what I had for my ferrets, it uses a valve instead of a ball. But like I said in my previous post it did start leaking/dripping after about 8 months.

Re: Water Bottle

I have just a random water bottle. I don't know what type. I fill it to the tippy top and squeeze a bit out so that is creates a vaccuum.

The way you descibed that you cleaned it seems very difficult. I put a couple spoonfulls of rice in the bottle, a little bit of vinagar and water and shake, shake, shake, make sure a bit gets into the nozzle, shake, shake, shake, and then dump eerything out, rinse it with water a few times and it's good as new!

Re: Water Bottle

I will try the spring action too, because the bottle I have seems not to be working anymore, it's like the ball gets stuck or something, and I have to move it to make sure they have water, so I am urged tomorrow to buy one from a store.

Re: Water Bottle

All water bottles drip at least a little bit but if you fill it all the way up and then press on the ball for about 3 seconds it should create a vaccume.

Re: Water Bottle

Water Buddy water bottles are excellent. They're a little pricey, but they do not leak at all, you can fill them from the top, and they don't suck water back in, so they stay clean. They will last a long time. I got mine at a local pet supply store, but you can buy them online as well.

Re: Water Bottle

The Lixit Flat-Bac have springs, I'm having a great, successful try of it so far. They drip like crazy until the vacuum forms completely, though, and attaching it to a C&C cage was a little awkward. So far, though, Mogwai plays with his bottle a little less because it takes more than one lick to get a sufficient amount of water for him to "play" with.

I bought a Lixit too, and it was awkward to attach it (decided to also attach it to the inside not outside cause it was better), but afterward it was much easier then the other bottle, and it stays better because of its flat side. I pressed the ball more for the correct vacuum (I think it has another ball added). I hope it lasts cause I really like it. It's a little smaller then the one I had, so it's not a waste of water when you clean and put fresh water daily.

I have a question. I saw some "more advanced" bottles, having a valve system. They say it is much better and ok, but is it safe? I mean it works by having a pin inside the spout, against a rubber ring at the back. It releases water only when the guinea pig licks the pin. Isn't that bad for their little tongues?

I saw those, too. They've been recommended to me, but I didn't think my guys would get the hang of it without complaining at me. I took a good, long look at them, too, and pressed it with my finger and I just didn't like it. Mogwai's kind of clumsy, and while it was rounded and all, it was still kind of pokey-like. That's a technical term.

The Water Buddy uses this system. It works great. My pigs got the hang of it immediately. The pin is not sharp, so it does not hurt them... think of it as a little lever that they press. I would highly recommend it since it does not leak or accumulate backwash.

I just got a bottle from Walmart, but I can't use it. The cap and nozzle smell so strong of plastic and metal that it even makes the water smell like a plastic/metal mix.

I sure don't want my babies to be drinking anything that may be toxic to them. Do you have this problem with the Walmart bottle? If so, how do you get rid of that metal/plastic odor?

I've been using 2 Super Pet water bottles since May and haven't had any problems with leaks since I've been using them. Prior to these bottles I went through 3 different kind of bottles in a month.
