i was just wondering what everyone thought about this gravity bin feeders? i know they are good because they can store a lot of food, but isnt that bad because the food will go stale and wont be as fresh if it doesnt get eaten in a day or so.

just wondering what everyone else thought about these? good? bad?

I think it's best to store it in an airtight container and put it fresh in their bowls every day. Helps preserve the nutritional content and the taste.

Those kinds of things (you can get automated water feeders too) are often used by people with large numbers of animals such as breeders, as they cut down the amount of time you need to spend loking after the animals. But for a caring pet owner, it's not a chore. Plus it's good to keep a close eye on how much their eating and drinking on a daily basis as a change in eating habits could tip you off that something is wrong - with those kinds of feeders you'd either have to open it up (in which case why not just use a bowl) or you'd only find out they were eating less after the 5 days or a week was up.

I have one of those. My piggs always tip it over (They attack it and drag it down). And I don't fill it up all the way because they like fresh food. It's not really worth the money.

I got the one that holds upto 5lbs. I only fill it half way and I fill it everyother day because I have 10 girls in one cage and thats what I use it for. for the boys I went to the dollar store and got 2 small plastic storage container and drilled 2 holes in it to zip tie it to the cage so they cant tip it over and drag it all over the place.

I have one that I use, though I don't put too much into it. I think it's great. because I can fill it up with food for an overnight's stay, and I don't need to worry too much. I totally agree with Treen about the freshness, though--they much prefer fresh food to the stale stuff.

Im thinking about getting some. I go to my dads house every other weekend and it would make things easier for my mom. And I wouldent worry about them as much.

mn and angeld, what kind of gravity feeders do you use? Mine tend to get all kinds of bedding in theirs and it's really irritating. I don't like them eating any more of their bedding than they already do.

the kind i got was for a cat feeder at walmart for 5bucks and they cant tip it over or drag it.

okay so seems like everyone agrees that the food should be fresh so this wouldnt really be worth it unless you have a lot of piggers. sounds good. thanks

I actually got mine from a pet store (yuck!). I use the one from the link above. It clips on to the side so that it can't tip.

When I fill it its gone in 2 days because of peanut and muffy. muffy loves to eat but not getting fat and peanut is having babies and she is keeping her self healthy. Im still waiting for peanut to have her pups.

wow... do you fill the gravity bin feeder to the top? thats a lot of food in a couple of days. but then again one of your piggies is pregnant so maybe thats why. anyway good luck with the pups. keep us updated!

I don't, I just switched to a bowl, feeding some fresh each day. I'm seeing if they eat more or less this way.

I donno about gravity feeders, I think the food would get icky if left in tehre too long uneaten... So maybe if your going to be gone for a day or two and you dont have many piggers it could be something useful

It's not too bad, actually--it just gets a bit dry. I know it's better to have fresh food every day, but it's sort of valuable when you're leaving for an overnight or two and want to make sure they've got enough to make it through.

I use it everyday. I had a pregnant one who just gave birth to 5 babies and another on the way with 3 possible and they eat alot. It really helps if ya gonna be gone all day or a weekend and have some one pop in your home to check on em and give em veggies and water and if food needed filled fill it. I picked up 2 more one for the boys and the other for the girls so the girls now have 2.
