Unhappy I am the worst mommy..

chip just passed away. I was just giving pepe a bath and cutting mats out of his fur. I just noticed that when cutting one of the mats out, i cut him all the way to his skin! there is no fur left only skin. i put bag balm on it and he is now separted from his friend. I lined the cage with a towel so itll be softer on his boo boo. Anything else i should/can do?

I am about to turn my slef in for pet abuse.... I am such a bag mother.

Re: I am the worst mommy..

If it only cut through the top of the skin with no bleeding or open wound then don't be too concerned. Put him back with his friends or he will be very lonely and upset and make sure to watch the wound so it doesn't get infected. Keep the cage extra clean. If it did cut all the way through the skin, there was plenty of bleeding, or it's now an open wound it would be best to see a vet.

I did the same thing to my long haired cat when I was younger. I thought he was gonna die from it and wouldn't confess I did it even though the scissors and hair were still sitting on the floor

Its the first layer of skin, i can see the inside of him. No bleeding. I am just worried that itll get infected. Should i join him with his friend or not?

Re: I am the worst mommy..

Guinea pigs are very social and hate being alone. Any of mine would be extremely upset and stressed out to be away from all their friends and if you keep them apart too long they'll have to redo the herd order when you put them back together. If the wound is shallow and your cage is kept clean there shouldn't be any problems putting him with the others. Right now Orbit has a shoulder wound all the way down to the muscle and a chunk out of his eye but he's still in with Cinnamon. If the bedding does bother him I would lay some towels down in the cage and change them frequently so he has a clean soft place to lay.

Re: I am the worst mommy..

I have had an experience with ripping out fur also. One time my guinea pig Abby got out of her cage and decided to go underneath the couch and she got stuck in the corner and I had to get her out and I lifted up the couch and some of her fur was caught in it and got pulled out. It takes a little while to grow back, but it will grow back if you give it some time.

It was an accident, and judging from how freaked out you are, it probably won't happen again. Don't be too hard on yourself.

If there's no bleeding then you probably have just cut the fur off - don't worry. Fur grows back in no time. If you brush long haired piggies every day there will be less chance of them getting matted fur, so you don't have to worry about this happening again.

Re: I am the worst mommy..

Accidents happen, and this was a minor one, so don't be hard on yourself. I suspect it's the same feeling you would get if you clipped your pigs' nail too short and cut into the quik - you feel bad about it, but in 'reality' it's not as bad as you imagine.
