How big are your guinea pigs? Mine are HUGE! I was reading a book last night about the "Super Guinea Pig" breed, and it was saying that Super Guinea Pigs are 2 1/2 pounds, about twice the average size of a regular guinea pig. Well, if that is true, mine are sure close to being Super Guinea Pigs, because Killer Whale is 2 pounds 6 ounces! Herbie is 2 pounds, 2 ounces. They are total porkers. Maybe I should make Killer Whale a little cape with "SGP" embroidered on the back of it...hehehehehe |

Cuy guinea pigs are on average 7-8 pounds. They are the "super sized guinea pigs". Heh. Average pigs weigh 2-3 lbs usually, or close to that. My pigs- all mine are on average 2-3 lbs... XD They're all pretty much in the same zone, cept one pig, my youngest is almost 2 lbs. |

My nephew has a guinea pig he adopted from me he is now 3lbs and 6 oz and still gaining. I have a 2lbs, 15oz, 2lbs, 11oz, 2lbs 14oz, 2lbs, 13oz and 2lbs 10oz. The rest are 2lbs to 2lbs and 6oz. None of mine are under that and stopped growing. I have one who is an average piggie. She is 2lbs and 4oz. |

Huh, that is strange....I guess the book is wrong about the "Super Size" pig. I didn't think 2 1/2 pounds seemed too super sized! My vet told me Herbie and Killer Whale are both overweight and should lose some of it... but according to the posts, mine aren't big in comparison! |

I dont beleive the "cuy" cavy differs from the regular pet cavies we see and own. The only difference is that where they are being used for food - they are being selectively bred from the biggest x biggest. Over the generations this will end up creating larger cavies. If people continually bred the smallest/runts to eachother - then over the generations it would result in smaller cavies. My boys are both pretty large - around the 1.7 / 1.8kg (not sure in pounds, but 1 kg is 2.2 pounds, so that would make them around 3½pounds). |

I know they don't, but aren't they just a lot bigger? |

But I have read on many forums and websites that they are different and where members will battle to the death in trying to prove exactly that. Quote:
As I said before, with years of selective breeding for larger ones, they are overall "larger" cavies, but still the same size as some of the larger ones we (forum members / general public) own. |

I agree with the selective breeding thing Ascot - 2.4 pounds Furlong - 2.6 pounds They are both boars and are around 2 years old. My old scales were wrong (or I wasn't reading them right!). I thought Furlong was 3lb's but I guess not. He's still my chub though. |

I think mom to cujo has one of those super size piggies. I have seen pics of him and he is way bigger than a normal sized piggie. |

Yes, but you have to take her age into account. How old is she? Females tend to weigh less too. |
