    Pet Store Guinea Pig Question

You may remember we lost our piggie Juliet almost 2 weeks ago. I have been searching for a new cage-mate for our remaining pig, but we live in a very small town and even in the surrounding areas there is just nothing available. She is lonely (even though we are giving her lots of love and attention) and I am wondering if it is better to make her be alone or just get a pet store piggie. I know many of you are against this, but I feel so bad for our lonely girl and feel like I am out of options. The first two were from the pet store because didn't know better and I feel confident in the store, but don't know what I should do?

Are you sure? Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder or craigslist: washington, DC classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events should come up with something.

Where do you live, we can help you get a pig from a rescue or other option besides a pet store.

I wouldn't buy from a pet store, and I know you shouldn't have to resort to that. You should try to use those sites and share your location so we can help.

If you really want her to have a friend and you are just out of options and dont know where else to look then I would just go have a look at the pet store piggies. And if they have one that is pretty healthy then I would suggest maybe holding her for a sec and just checking everywhere to see if she is healthy. Then you can make a decistion.

Re: Pet Store Guinea Pig Question

Try PetFinder.com, or Craigslist as well. Sometimes you'll have luck there, or contacting vets in your area about possible rescues. The best thing to do is to give it some time, keep searching, and be willing to reach a little outside of your boundaries if possible to travel. I know people here have set up 'piggy-trains' before as well, helping move a piggy along from one destination to the next to get them to their forever home. Pet stores just continue a cycle of abuse that I'm sure you don't want to contribute too. It may take some work, but it's definitely possible! I wish you luck in finding your piggy a buddy, and am sorry for your recent loss.

Lots of piggies within 40 minutes or so, I promise! Check out Rabbit & Small Animal Rescue in Westland, MI, or even Furbabies Haven and Rescue in Downriver (Near me in Ecorse, MI). They both have Facebook pages. I know RASA (where I adopted Potter) is always looking for people to adopt their piggies.

Re: Pet Store Guinea Pig Question

As Zuidy pointed out, Craigslist is a great resource. You can often find piggies there even if you don't have any in a shelter nearby. If you live near a pet store, that means impulse buyers who get them and want to dump them later, and CL is where that often happens. We got one of our current piggies on CL. Just make sure it's a private party, not a breeder.

As for pet stores, what store is near you? I recently learned that some Petcos adopt out small animals. You just have to make sure it's a real adoption, i.e. an animal that was dumped there vs. the store trying to get rid of older animals. You also have to make sure that the fee doesn't go to the store or it isn't an adoption. I lucked into finding an adoption pig at Petco, and the "fee" was a donation to their spay/neuter fund. That's the only way I personally find it acceptable to get a pet store pig (and I say that as someone who bought my first piggy from a store and had him die 15 days later from a URI).

Nonsense, Piggy g-ma! Look at all these adoptables near you:

Yes! And always try searching the Detroit Metro Craigslist. It encompasses many areas, even as far south as Monroe.
