Our short hair Rose has been shedding a lot. I do not think it is mites or anything else. She just naturally sheds a ton from all over. No bald patches or anything.
Anyone else have a pig that sheds a lot?
Guess I will have to brush her more.![]()

I am actually curious about this to, I was used to only brushing my merino and aby breeds fur as they both have particularly long fur (well my merino does anyway) that I thought needed to be brushed more. But my 4 American shorthaired seem to be shedding a lot more, I'm thinking it could be due to the warmer weather we have been having.
I have this problem as well. My two American girls (sisters) shed more than our 80lb labrador retriever- and labs shed A LOT! Haha. I've always been amazed at how much hair is on the fleece, or that gets on the towels that I have under them for lap time. They shed non-stop year round no matter what I do. Brushing doesn't seem to help much, so I just have learned to deal with it, since I can't really change it! I don't remember my guineas (3 Americans, 1 Aby) in the past shedding like this. But, I guess maybe because I didn't have fleece bedding back then and didn't notice it as much? Any suggestions are welcome, because I hate all the hair!
My boys shed too. I always have hair on my clothes.
My piggies shed but not a whole bunch. But, they are only 2 months old, so many the age factor brings the shedding down?
I think age has something to do with it...my 5-year old Quee sheds a pretty crazy amount, and 9-month old Kwee sheds considerably, but not as much. Curly hardly sheds at all and she's 10 weeks old, although she's also a teddy, so I dunno if that has anything to do with it.
I was thinking weather too, but we have the AC on 24/7 and at the same temp (78F), so I dk.
I took both my girls out today and my longer hair girl Miranda hardly shed but Rose covered me in hair and I had to clean the brush like 5 times.
I will admit I only brush them 1x a week so I am going to bump it to several times a week and see if that helps.
I have to admit I hardly brush my shorthaired piggies, I didn't realise they needed much brushing and they don't like being brushed much either. So I focused more on my merinos fur and keeping it cut short so it doesn't drag on the floor. As it is so curly it needs to be brushed quite a bit to. I am not sure what could be causing all the shedding.
yes my abbies shed a lot, my short haired dont though ~XD
My pig sheds alot too! I get hair on everything when I take him out for play time or when I pet him! I think he is part Peruvian and Short haired.
They are totally adorable.!!
For those of you who don't know.........we have a "shedding Aby club" here on the forum.
Chester seems to shed more seasonally, although he sheds a good bit year round. I wear a lot of black clothes, so I absolutely have to put him on a towel even though he seems to prefer to be on my chest and close to my skin. I can brush him.......and half an hour later he still sheds.
Speaking of brushing him.......it's the funniest sight. Not sure if it is because he is an Aby with hair growing in all directions, but he is a mess when being brushed! He can't decide if it's annoying, if it tickles, or if it feels good. It's something you have to see to understand.
Maya is a Texel and shed far less than Chester. When we adopted her, she had been a show piggy and had lots of gorgeous hair. No need for all that hair, so I keep it cut fairly short. The hand vac sometimes picks up hair in the cage, but I almost never find it on my clothes.
In the summer, I bathe both of them about every 10-14 days, and that seems to reduce the shedding considerably.
Perhaps you should start the "shedding short-hair club"?
My gidget sheds too. alot.
My Princess and Prince are American Shorthair and they shed so much, that when I go to put them back in their cages, I am full of hair. I don't take them out at the same time. It's crazy how much hair they shed and don't go bald from it. Lol
Bean and Zoey shed a lot, they are both American Shorthairs.
I'm so glad I found this post. My Sqeakers and Brownie both shed. Squeakers sheds a lot more however.
my piggies often often shed, they get fur all over me![]()
I have four shorthairs and they all shed. I have an all black pig and a brown pig and they don't seem to shed as much as my other two who have a lot of white fur. I'm always covered with white hair after holding them. Thank heavens Costo sells lint removers in bulk.![]()
