    Grinding Teeth

My guinea pig recently chattered his teeth at me. I'm pretty sure that means he's angry, but not absolutely sure. What could have caused in in the first place? I was laying down, petting him softly, making sure he could see my hands, too... (trying to get him used to me... he's not completely used to me yet, even though I've had him since he was 6 months old, and he's about 3 now. ) and yet he chattered at me! Why?

    Re: Grinding Teeth

Interesting question! Often when I get down into my girls' cage, either for cleaning or to pick one of the piggies up, my oldest girl, Maebe, will chatter like that at me because A: she feels threatened, B: she thinks I will be soon tracking her down for snuggles, or C: she doesn't want to be separated from her little sister. Does anyone else have this "separation anxiety" when they get a Piggie out? Does anyone else get these noises too?

My piggie Steve is not big on being held and chatters his teeth at me sometimes when I go to pick him up. When he does I just give him his space and try again later. I also think that it has a lot to do with him being a male and territorial because he never does it unless I have my hand in his cage. Guineas can be moody just like people somtimes.

Teeth chattering is a natural way for them to communicate. They usually do this when they are uncomfortable. We're you laying close to him? Laying on your side?

You could have had your face too close to him, were petting him in a spot or manner that he didn't like or maybe he wanted to go back in his cage. It could have been that he needed to go to the bathroom. Chattering teeth usually means they're annoyed.

I know whistles isn't too big a fan of his bum being petted certain times.
